That's one swell rifle, no fooling.
I'd clean it though and raise the ire of everyone.

Nice!
It appears to be a 5 groove barrel from the muzzle, was that the norm for them? I have a 5 groove Long Branch. Who made the bayonets for them in Australia?

Thanks 5th Batt. Your Lithgow is gorgeous! This set of photos shows a fine example of what a Lithgow, pretty much just out the door of the arsenal will be
expected to look like; a rifle ready for issue and battle. Thanks again.

What is the significance of the "S*S" on the the receiver ring? Stands for "Sold out of Service", indicating the rifle was disposed of by the military. Very nice rifle. I would post my '42 Lithgow but it would be shamed in comparison. |

I can only say what others have said already, a very good looking rifle, congratulations. Now I have a standard of what to look for.
Cheers

5Batt,
Actually I DO have a marksmans H marked Lithgow ... mine is a 1942 all matchng heavy barrel in Australia Range Pattern ... as you may well know many of the WW1 H barreled Lithgows were drawn from Australian Target Rifle Clubs as Club rilfles already in use by civvy's. Mine is a WW2 Club pattern and is near mint condition in every way ... it has its H barrel spun on in 1953 so would have been fitted for or during Korea as many Lithgow's got re-barreled during Korea. I'll post pics in due course ... great WW1 H marked Lithgow you have there.

for some reason there is no image or way to open up the image in 1st frame. I am missing something here. I would like to see it too.

I've noticed that the 1917 Mk III rifle has the front blade staked near the center of the offset front sight base while the 1942 Mk III* has its blade
staked over to the right so as to be closer to the centerline of the bore.
Am I correct in thinking that the slot for the magazine cut off in some way added to the tendency of the No.1 rifle to "throw" to the left due to uneven harmonics caused by the lesser mass of steel on the right side of the action body? PS I ask because the 1916 Mk III I'm restoring also has the blade centered to the base and required a half minute adjustment of the rear sight to the right to zero in, so it seems it throws to the left pretty much as expected and compensated for by the offset base. Very nice rifles by the way. The S*S marking looks nicely done.
