GEW 98 - what caliber is it? |
Lead | |
|
I have a newly purchased GEW 98 and want to know what kind of ammo it uses. There is a stamp on the top of the chamber 7,9 or 7.9 and the letter S above that.
Also the hand guard is split and wanted the best way to repair and refinish the stock. The guard is solid feeling in the gun as it is. I am just starting on my
collection of old military guns and this is the first one. I am in the process of buying a Inland M1 Carbine and looking forward to the new hobby. Thank you
very much for any and all help.

It uses regular 8MM Mauser ammo (7.92X57MM).
I use Gorilla glue to repair hand guards.. Refinishing a stock actually devalues it. If the gun is a mismatched and the stock is crappy anyway that is different but if it is decent I suggest a good cleaning with some wood oil on the walnut. Most people do not want to register at a photo site just to view a picture so perhaps you can use Photobucket to keep your Mauser/rifle pictures. The 4th icon in the tool bar from the left of "Spellcheck" is Photobucket and clicking on it will go to your account and show your pictures and all you have to do is click on a thumbnail toi add it to your post, very cool idea. Unfortunately the hand guard is in two pieces. I think I will leave it alone as I do not want to screw it up any further. The numbers on the metal parts and
the stock all match "except" the bolt is marked with different numbers. I found this rifle at a local sale and the price was right I believe? Can
someone give an idea what the value would be in the condition it is in. Thanks again.

Without pictures we can see here it is hard to say. I have seen decent matching guns for $400.00.
These do not command K98k prices even if excellent condition. I have also seen them higher but turned down one that matched (except stock) for $350.00 with a good bore. A Gew98 should handle the recoil a little better at the range and are they nice shooters with a good bore. Wulfmann

You have a very nice rifle. I believe that you said all numbers match except the bolt? It is Imperial German with an ersatz sling, the sling alone is
collectible. I would not even dream of refinishing it and if you glue (carefully) the handguard back together, you have a keeper. Soon, we'll tell you how
to set the sling up correctly.....

The bore looks to be in very good shape. Is it safe to shoot new ammo in this old of a gun?

The new Winchester factory ammo uses 0.321" projectiles and is very lightly loaded - in fact I always get primer protrusion when I fire these (they are
not very accuracte in either of my 8mms - I sometimes buy them if unloaded brass isn't available - I prefer to use Winchester brass for all my calibres).
The Prvi Partizan ammo is warm-to-hot but shoots very accurately.
Edit - It would be prudent to check headspace first, but, unless it is really bad, it shouldn't cause any issues.

The mismatched bolt raises headspace issues, but likely that is really a non-issue also, due to extreme uniformity in manufacturing. If otherwise in good
shape, that rifle is stronger than sin, and thus fully shootable! If in doubt have a truly qualified gunsmith check it out for you and clear it for firing, a
bit costly but sometimes worth the piece of mind.
As stated by others before, do nothing more than a light cleaning and a careful handguard repair. You have a fine representative sample there, and if you are not willing to be a "keeper" of that history, you should pass it on to someone who will be. |

Dan ; you have a nice gew98 shooter. Looks from the pics that not much is matching. Anyhow you have what appears to be a kickass original web sling. Please do
let me know if you want to part with that sling in some way.

Dan if you are worried about headspace, buy a set of gauges from www.brownells.com; you'll need "go",
"no-go" and a "field" guage to check the headspace. I actually carry mine in my mobile cleaning kit, for when I come across 8mm's in
pawn shops.
The Romanian 8mm that www.aimsurplus.com has now is good stuff, get yourself a few crates (yes crates). The Yugo "sniper" ammo will be more accurate. Learn how to clean for corrosive ammo IMMEDIATELY after finishing shooting. It's easier than waxing a pair of skis or folding a parachute (two things I'm learning). hsc. |
