Do I get a complete upper or just the whole gun?
Price difference is $305.00 dollars.
Are Smith and Wesson receivers update-able with match triggers?

All receivers can have parts replaced.
Figure this: If you just buy the upper, you'll need to purchase the following: Lower receiver (there's been a run on them lately) Should still be able to get one for $125-$150. Buttstock-$25-$200 depending on what you choose. Buffer & spring: $25-$50 Lower receiver parts: $50-$60 In essence, if you go on the "low end" of the required lower parts, you could save ~ $100 or so over buying the complete rifle. Is $100 worth it to you to have it factory assembled? Depends on you, doesn't it? Life is the crummiest book I ever read, there isn't a hook; Just a lot of cheap shots, pictures to shock, and characters an amateur would never dream up... |

ThePitbullofLove wrote:I decided to put away an extra lower, and went shopping for one this past week. Centerfire was all out of DoubleStars at $99, not sure when they would have more, or what the price would be when they got them. I made the circuit of all the shops in my area yesterday (90 mile round trip), and lucked out in finding one shop that had a S&W lower for $129! I grabbed it. I didn't even know that S&W sold lowers separately, but now I have one. It appears to be well-made, but virtually identical to a DoubleStar. Is it worth a $30 premium? Maybe, if I sell the rifle I build with it someday, the S&W logo may add some desirability. But, since I plan to keep it until I'm talking face to face with Charlton Heston, I doubt that I'll ever see an extra $30 worth of performance out of it. However, with the current market, the $99 lowers that we had all gotten used to may be a thing of the past...

Keep in mind that some upper assemblies dont come with a bolt/carrier.This just drives up the cost .Check out www.model1sales.com they have good prices, and its
says US made parts.Complete rifle less lower 460.00 bucks not bad if they have them in stock.

Oh no doubt guys!
I just figured up I could save about $100.00 if I built my own with a complete upper I found in 5.45x39. Put that 100 towards a detachable carry handle, which I'll need since S&W doesn't come with one. However, I can put a rifle I found on payments, something I may not be able to do with the upper. I may, get another lower for myself and one for resale later. I did though, just pre-order 8 mags in that caliber from AIM. GREG

Well, i just bought 2 complete uppers, and 2 complete lowers to make 2 complete rifles.
The first one is a Bushmaster lower with 6 position buttstock and GG&G dominator upper. Total was about 1400! I could have bought the complete rifle with the VLTOR butt for 1329.00. Sure wish they would have mentioned that when i was buying the upper and lower! The GG&G upper is a work of art though. Very high quality....14.5 inch bbl. with BUIS flip sights, tactical rails, 1:7 twist, milspec hard anodized finish and chrome bore. Bummer is, no bolt, carrier or charging handle, so that was extra. Bushmaster lower, with same Milspec hard anodized finish, can't go wrong there. 2nd one is a DPMS lower with 6 position stock, then tonight i found a DPMS AP-4 16" A3 upper with removable carry handle for about 950 total for both upper and lower complete. That was a little better deal, considering i just went to the GG&G website and they are having a special on the Dominator upper for 749.00 WITH bolt and charging handle! Crap.... That was a 200 dollar ooops...(that's a lot of mags!) So make sure you look around, i just HATE paying too much, especially since i'm not a rich man. Dang black rifle frenzy is killing me....Not to mention a child custody battle that's heating up at the same time. I might be running around buying this crap, only to have to sell it to pay the attorney fee's. Oh well, my kids are more important to me than any rifle is. My Milsurp collection is mostly all being sold allready, so here we go... usrifle

I couldn't afford another complete rifle right now (remodeling) but did manage to swing a complete upper from DPMS.
I ordered the Low-Pro ($444) about 3 weeks ago with a 16" SS Bull barrel, Glacier Guards, weaver gas block, bolt/bolt carrier, upgraded to the A3 receiver (for an extra $35). Total was $479 (free shipping!). I already have a Bushmaster Varminter but wanted a carbine length AR. There is a lengthy wait right now when ordering from DPMS. Mark at DPMS told me in an email they were 42,000 barrels behind when I ordered mine and I would have a 2 or 3 month wait. I hope you-know-who doesn't do anything to muck things up before mine gets shipped. |

Hi,
I'm just the opposite of you. I've got a DPMS carbine and just ordered(?) a varmint rifle kit from Model 1. I don't know if I'll ever see that either, but I do have a Stag lower ready to go if I get the parts.
Maybe I should have looked for the whole rifle loacaly?

Made a couple calls on uppers today. Model 1 has a 12-16week wait. Del-ton has a 14 week wait. M&A took them off their web page. All the other pages I
looked at say not in stock and/or backordered.

a year or so ago my son was looking at what i could help with , i helped with two builds and the parts i needed i just went out and picked up , today there is
a waiting list , fine if you have one and want another , but not good if you have none and want one ,
prices and lead times will go down for those who can wait , but perhaps the choices and options will be altered i did grab a DPMS LR#)* upper i needed for my current build , i was very lucky , these are many months out ,
the lower is not in hand but in the safe , now i need parts kit and butstock - but im not sure where ill go with that yet ,

Model 1 has a 12-14 week wait?? I have seen a few items on their site that say "backorder" but nothing on any of their standard uppers......my pet
peeve is companies that have sales web sites and list items as in stock but then you order and find out they have a backorder
Luckily I got my two lowers from NoDakSpud when I did, even those took 2 months to come into my dealer. I don't see anything wrong with having 1 assembled lower and a few uppers to swap out on it. It's already being done in the army, they have a designated marksman who carries a 14.5" M16 with a fixed A2 buttstock as a standard weapon, and in a bag on his back is a 24" uber-hi grade scoped upper that he swaps out when he gets into a position to provide overwatch. One could have a standard M16 type rifle in 5.56 and have uppers in 5.45 and 7.62x39 to swap out if you feel like shooting a different caliber. My M16 slick side clone will stay complete , I like it as is, but I also have 2 other "beater" A1 uppers that need lowers and parts to complete. My complete A1 semi- clone is really nice, mint bore pefect phosphate finish, but if I feel like "blasting" without putting miles on my nice A1 I would swap out with the beat-up A1 upper and go to town. If I wanted to shoot my nice one, which is a tack-driver with 62gr. 5.56, I leave it as is. I would go with some complete uppers, and given that they are still available in the future get some lowers to make them into complete rifles later on. I also have a Bushmaster standard 20" and a 16" with a collapsible stock, I had planned on getting a 7.62x39 complete upper to swap out with the Bushmaster. I used this lower to test fire my A1's before I had them built, worked flawlessly. I had considered getting a 16" .22 LR complete upper to swap out with the shorty-stock Bushmaster, but still wrestling with the $500 cost vs. just continuing to shoot with the 10/22 I outfitted with A1-type sights. I'll have to call Model 1 tomorrow to see if their .22 uppers are even available, I would imagine ammo costs plus "panic buying" has .22 uppers in high demand. My neighbors don't mind the noise but out of courtesy to my nearest neighbor I restrict my backyard shooting to .22's and the occasional 9mm and .38. I go to the nearby range to shoot 5.56 and others. |
