I have these mounts on a sporterized K98. I'd like to return
the rifle to normal but still use these scope mounts. Can anyone tell me where I could get some rings that will work with these?
TIA

Rings will have to be fitted to these mounts. They are not a standard. New England Custom Guns can provide the parts and/or do the work. Unless you are well
experienced in metal work and have observed and handled a few claw mount scopes it will be best to let NECG do the work. The work is expensive though.
I'm aware of one other smith in this country that will fit claw mounts but I cannot remember the name or internet address. Vlad |

I had a set very similar but there are many very similar that might appear to work but will not as they were individually fitted.
There are occasionally groups of claw rings on eBay that might work but then getting the scope with the correct sized tube might be difficult or much harder. Still it is or could be a fun search and one that extreme patience will be required. It is not like today's somewhat standardized sizes. Wulfmann

Vladymere,
Thanks for the tip on NECG, you're right they are pricey! $650 to fit rings to my rifle. I imagine they do good work, but just a little too much money for a sporterized K 98 |

Have you checked out Laws k98 book on the sniper variations? Those mounts look fairly old. Its conceivable that it may have been pressed into service as a
sniper.

I just thumbed thru Mr.Law's "Sniper Variations" book and didn't see anything like those mounts. I'm not saying their not Authentic
German manufactured, I'm just commenting that I didn't see those particular specimens in the book.

Senich's Book, "The German Sniper" is a better reference for scoped Kar98k. The German Mounts are NOT "Military or commerical" but
developed from the early 1915 etc Sniper Mounts, which in turn were developed from the Early 1900s commercial (Gunsmith made) Scope mounts. So a variety of
mounting styles ( Turret, claw, offset, low, high etc, even long relief )were tried and widely used.
Whilst your example may be a professionally converted Rifle, post-WW II, I would NOT "retrovert" it....it is a classic type of conversion, and even these are becoming collectible these days. Probably done in the early 1950s (check the Barrel proof marks). If you convert it back to "iron sights" what do you have...a motherless truck rifle, worth less because of the loss of old, and probably original design, claw mounts. Typical German Hunting rifle in its present set-up. BTW, what calibre is it in??? And what condition is the woodwork?...I would simply mate it to a good hunting stock (oiled, NOT varnished) with European style checkering. and a steel buttplate, not the rubber namby-pamby things one sees these days.... BTW, the rifle is set up to use with the scope on or off as required (ie, with the iron sights) Regards, Doc AV AV Ballistics...Lover of classical Euorpean and British Hunting rifles, of which I have not a few... |
