Had a good weekend, at a tiny gunshow I spotted a lonely enfield standing in a rack. B.S.A., dated 1910, with cut-off, matching wood, barrel and nose cap
numbers match, plus WWI sling. Has a rebuilt stamp of 1918, but sorry to say no sign of volley sights. Two things are pretty unusual, no import marks at all,
lifted the forewood, no Ten Tonne stamp, nothing. Plus right on the reciever is a tiny round stamping. Best I can tell it is, Osterr Gendarmee, would that
be national police of the Netherlands? If I recall post WWII, Enfields were supplied to the police forces that had turned in their weapons, correct? So if
it was in Europe til the 1950s, how did it make it over here sans an import stamp. Any ideas? Plus, at Cabellas found a Lithgow stamped 1916, but,
doesn't have the Lithgow Shield. Has a four digit number on the reciever, none on the nose cap, and the bolt looks new with no numbers on it at all. The
wood, is awful, 3 different types, or at least shades, is it possible it could be a Khyber Pass rifle? Like I said, an interesting weekend.

Likely "Österreich Gendarmerie" - Austrian Police.
Austria was one of the countries to which Britain supplied arms for police use following WWII.

If the cut off is still there but not the volley sights I expect the fore end is an EFD walnut transitional rebuild stock. I'm ordering an unissued fore
end for my 1915 Mk III along with replacement cut off plate.
Some Post WW2 rebuild stocksets were Beech but those I've seen had no provision for the cut off. Might have been a private purchase by a returning US serviceman.

Until 1968, rifles imported into the US were not required to be stamped. The '68 GCA ended imports until the '86 machine gun ban. Only firearms brought
into the US since '86 have been required to be import marked.

I have a 1918 NRF that served some time in the tropics due to it's green paint on the metal, and after the war spent some time in Austria and bears that
same stamp. I think they are very neat rifles.

Thanks to everyone here for their replies. The stamping is tiny, round, what may be the Austrian eagle in the center, Austrian it is, as there is an Austrian
stamping on the magazine too. Pointed out by a friend that admires Enfields. Now to find a place to put it.

A square 10 wrote: SSSSH I'll PM you the details. Too many find out about them and the price will skyrocket. I waited too late on the ones they had left in stock when I first inquired and they'd sold those before I got back to them, but they've ordered more from the UK and should have them in sometime in January. Hopefully they'll reserve one for me. |
