Cheap broken shell extractor |
Lead | |
|
I'm sure I'm not the only one that has had a case head separation with reloads. I've had it happen twice. The first time was with an Enfield. I
ordered a 303 broken shell extractor and it worked great. It cost me about 10 bucks plus shipping though, and I had to wait for it to get here. The next time
was in a Spanish 1916 Mauser in 7mm. Guess what? I could not find a broken shell extractor in that caliber. Then I had an idea. I took a brass 50 cal. bore
brush and inserted it into the broken case from the breach end. The bristles were forced back at an angle and the tips gripped the inside of the case as I
pulled it out. Worked slicker than greased snot. The bore brush was ruined but I only paid a buck and a half for it. This should work on any caliber. Just
adjust the size of the brush to the size of the inside diameter of the broken case. Maybe this has been thought of before, but since I have not heard of it, I
thought I would share. I hope this info will help someone out there.

Thanks for the idea. I'll store it away for future use on one of those inopportune moments that we are all likely to experience.

Brass bore brushes work on most shells. I also carry a few broken shell extractor tools.
In addition I carry a long steel rod to push out cases (when the case head is intact) and a thread tap that fits inside one case (when the head separates), I run the tap into the case from the breach then tap out with the rod. |

That's an excellent tip! I just love these forums for getting little pieces of info like that.
Don't forget, also, that Cerrosafe (the chamber casting metal) can be used to remove a stuck case. The only reason I know this is that I made a casting today and had to read the instructions again. Tim |
