New M95-need ammo info |
Lead | |
|
Picked a M95 this weekend at Big 5. I got a good rifle for $75.00. Haven't had the opportunity to get her cleaned up. I know someone has pobably posted
this, but I need to know if 7.62X54 ammo can be converted into 8X56R. I have heard that this is fairly common and besides I've got a boatload of the
russian stuff. I wuld appreciate any help. I live in the toolies so being able to do for myself rather than having to run into town, always helps. Thanks

I would order up 50 or 100 8x56R cases from Grafs and secure a few hunderd or more bullets from them as well.
There's quite a bit of load data and info in the previous pages here, just search out 8x56R reloading. You did great to pick one of these up for $75!!!

Is this the M95 long rifle or a carbine?
I have seen articles about reforming 7.62x54R to 8x56R but the case necks are very short. I have some 8x56R formed from 45/70 cases. Available brass from Grafs is the best choice and the Lee dies work very well. As for load data, there have been many discussions on this forum, I use data from the low end of 7.62x54R as I stay on the conservative side. Some re-loaders have pushed velocities up to original Military loads. Of note is the bullet size, .329" or .330" jacketed bullets perform best and are available, I resize .338" 200gr Hornady. For plinking and OK accuracy the .323" jacketed bullets work well in the M95 long rifle and OK in the carbines. |

Doug Henry,
Thanks for the info. My rifle is a carbine. I think it is going to be a good one. Rifling looks real good and even the stock is in pretty good shape. Been kinda under the weather and haven't had a chance to get it cleaned up properly yet. Wish me luck. Jeff |

Best of luck. These are fun to shoot.
The loud report usually gets the attention of others around you and that large rimed case is a conversation starter. Around here (San Jose, CA) the winter are mild with several days of clear moderate temperature, ideal for heading to the firing range. Just don't get stuck in the snow like I did. Yes it snows in the Santa Cruse hills but I grew up in Northern California snow country where the weather is like the North East so the weather here is moderate to me.

Converting 7.62X54R used to be common, but that was before 8X56R cases became available. IMO its just not worth the trouble now. Especially since you can get
the correct brass as cheaply as the Mosin brass. I need to order reloading dies and components for this round also, as I too just bought an M95 from Big 5.
