Favorite ammo for your Taurus 1911? |

Mine devours ball and FMJ, but won't cycle JHP, of which I tried four different types yesterday. Does this sound familiar to other Taurus 1911 owners? I
know that 1911s have this reputation to begin with.

What type JHP have you used?
I've had great luck w/ Remington Golden Sabers in 9x19, .40, and .45 in a lot of different guns. Cor-Bon Powerball is another you may want to try. This is like a JHP, but it has a round "cap" that helps w/ feeding. |

My Kimber has no problem with Federal 230 gr. Hydra-Shok. Never had a single problem. Which four types did you try?

Thanks guys. I tried an unknown type of Federal HP, Winchester 'Personal Protection', Winchester Ranger SXT JHP, and one other unknown Winchester HP.
None of them would successfully feed JHPs, and three out of four of them were steel cased, but I don't think that played into it at all. The feedramp is
steep, so I'm sure that the JHPs just aren't making the 'lift' up the ramp, as the nose of the bullets are canting down, and feeding downward
at an approximately 20-25 degree angle.

Try a couple of othr magazines with some round that won't feed with your magazine. Perhaps the trouble is magazine related.

Sounds like you need to adjust your mags. All slugs should be canted at an up angle.

Your Taurus should feed HP's without a problem, something is wrong. Mine feeds stubby little 185 grain lead wad cutters up through 230 grain HP's
and everything in between. Like others have suggested try a different mag or see about sending it back to Taurus. The days of a new 1911 not feeding HP's
are long gone.

Oh boy, now I gotta return my brand new Chip McCormicks!

I've never heard anything bad about Chip McCormick mags! If you tried three different CM mags I'd say you have a pistol problem. I assume the jams
you are experiencing are the HP of the bullet catching or jamming into the feed ramp? Just the same try the mags that came with the gun. You can probably do
that at home with just cycling them through the gun by hand. Let us know what happens.

Venaticus wrote:Ven, Yeppers...there be your problem, the Chip McCormick mags. When I was having a few feeding issues with the Chips, I did more online reaearch and was seeing where other gun owners, not just Taurus, were having some problems. No problem with quality of the mags, just one of those things. So far, I have handloaded the stubby 185 SWC by the thousands, the 200 SWC (a highly regarded bullet by 45 owners), 225 grain flat points cast, and the usual 230 grain RN, both cast and plated. Ran 50 rounds of JHP through it just in case I wanted to carry the gun. Feeds everything flawlessly, unless I am using my one and only Chip McCormick mag. I'm going to sell mine and buy a third Taurus mag, in fact. |

Some guns are funny. When I first got my Kimber CDP, it was 100% w/ the factory CM mag. But, if I used a Wilson, it would stovepipe about every 4th shot. Who
could imagine that????? A Wilson mag causing it to misfeed???? I called Kimber about the issue, it turns out the extractor didn't have quite enough tension
on it. I adjusted the extractor and since then it will feed from anything.
So, it may not necessarily be the magazine is junk. (I use CM mags in competition and I've never had a problem with them.) |

O.k....
I think I narrowed the problem down. I shot 194 rounds today, a mix of Winchester 'Personal Protection', Federal 'Hydra-Shok', Winchester Ranger SXTs, and 185 grain reloads. I used the Taurus factory mags, and topped off with another round after chambering the first and then adding a round to the mag, for a total of nine rounds. The only malfunctions I had were on topped-off mags. They consisted of a second round angled down into the feedramp with the slide retracted somewhat, and out of battery. The weird thing was that it also occurred on the two Taurus mags, not just the Chips. After about 100 rounds, it all stopped. It fed everything fine after that, and these were very rapid strings of fire. Then it hit me: "Oh, you moron," I thought. I never thought about a break-in period for the pistol, and today's rounds put the total round count at 507 by the end of the session. The more I shot, the faster I shot, the better the pistol performed. I think I found the problem. He just typed what you just read... Pat |

Happy, but embarrassing!
I think I'll still try the same tests again tomorrow or this week, just to make sure that was the complication. Thanks again for the advice, everyone- Pat |
