It is a very cool looking rifle that has seen a lot of deer hunts by the appearance of the worn finish on the receiver. Just wanting some input from someone who may have some experience with this old deer slayer.

99 Savage opinions needed |

Can anyone give me their opinion of a Savage Model 99 in 300 Savage? It was supposely made in the 20's amd looks original, good to very good condition,
straight stock with no cracks, very cool curved steel butt plate, not sure if it is a take down or not but it does have the snauble fore end. I stumbled across
it today, price $449.00.

I've never had any first hand experience with the model 99 but I do know they were popular and were top sellers. Here's a site that has info on dates of manufacture, etc. I have had first hand experience with the caliber tho. The 300 Savage will drop a deer in it's tracks....good round and available. I've heard of it used on hogs as well with the same results. If it's in good condition the price doesn't seem too bad......offer 'em $375 just out of principle. |

"price $449.00."
Buy it. Even a worn Savage 99, unless it's a Model 99C economy rifle, starts at around $475-$500. |

I have three model 99s, all in .303 Savage though. Unless the piece is a real rat I don;t think the price is out of line. Everything I have read about the .300
Savage cartridge echos what texraid has said about it.

I bought an early 50's vintage model 99 in 300 Savage, came with an old Weaver K-4 with dot reticule, It had a recoil pad installed, but at $425 for the
combo out the door I could not complain. I had only shot a few rounds through it until about two weeks ago when my son and I met over in Louisiana and gave it
a workout. It was punching nice tight groups with a very hot barrel considering how fast we were shooting. Not quite as powerful as a .308 but plenty for
anything in most of the US, espicially the eastern half.

The only reason that I don't have is that I don't have the money laying around when they come up for sale. I have 2 friends with Model 99's one in
.300 Savage and the other in .250-3000. They are both great rifles, The .300 is a great deer rifle caliber and will kill elk at ranges under 200 yards with a
180 grain bullet. The .250-3000 is a fine deer cartridge as well. Model 99's are nicely balanced and I really like the slick lever action. Scope mounts are
readily available. To sum things up, go buy it!

I've hunted with a 1957 vintage 99 in .300sav since i started dear hunting. great rifle, great cartridge. tried a scope on it for a few years, but settled
on Willliams peep rear. IMR4064 with 150gr bullets are a great combo, i have found that case capacity varies alot from manufacturer to manufacturer so you need
to work your loads up for your brass.....don't mix match brass. IIRC remy had the most volume. when i get back to the states I'm going to try out the
Barnes 130gr TSX.

I hope Smokepole50 bought that .300. I have that one and a 250-3000, both made in the late 40's or 50's. Serial numbers and other markings conflict
slightly. Neither one are the takedown model.
Anyway, that .300 has always been a fine hunter, in either 150 or 180 grain loads. Mine has a Redfield receiver sight on it which helps these old eyes. The 250-3000 has an old K6 Weaver that I had rebuilt years ago. It's also a good deer rifle with 100 grain or so bullets.

Being that old and in that chambering, it will probably have a slight case of excessive headspace, but you can deal with that by reloading and sizing your
brass accordingly. I find it a very pleasant rifle to shoot.
