Lithgow First World War Rifle Question |
Lead | |
|
I bought a Lithgow No. 1 Mk III rifle yesterday and I was wondering if anyone out there could help me date it. The date on the right band is worn and not
readible and all I can make out is "191_". The rifle is a very low serial number (SN 125) with all numbers matching. Since Lithgow started making
No.1 Mk III's around 1913, and my serial number being so low, I was guessing it was made around 1913-1914. Thanks for any help in advance.

Lithgow started from serial number 1 went through to 99,9999 then restarted at A1 to A99,999 and so on up to F. Given they didn't reach A until 1918 then a
serial number of 125 would be very early, 1914 at the latest.
