Hi All - I finally rounded out my mauser collection with an 1893. While I'm still missing a few major action variants (1871 and 1889 spring to mind),
this new find joins a 71/84, 1891, 1895, 1896, 1898 and 1903. The new rifle is a Chilean that's all matching except for the cleaning rod. Here are some

Hi Returnspring,
Nice find! You not only have one of the VERY few M1893 models used by Chile, but a rare Boer War rifle that was one of the 4,000 M1893's ordered by the ZAR, (South African Republic), one of the two Boer states that fought the British in the1899-1902 Second Anglo-Boer War. C-series rifles bearing numbers C1 to C4000 were shipped to South Africa by DWM but could not be delivered due tro the ourtbreak of the war and the subsequent British naval blockade of the ZAR's main port which was in Portuguese Mozambique. Your rifle was in that group. It was then returned to Germany, where it was resold and shipped to Chile with a new crest. Best Regards, John |

Thank you both for the congrats. I am very happy with the rifle and can't believe I was able to get it on GB without a fight!
John - thank you for the information. Could you help me with a question? Do you know if the rifles were originally shipped with a blank receiver ring or would they have had a crest of some sort -- either for the ZAR or a commercial crest like the Loewe rifles. What did the other South African republic, the Orange Free State, arm with? On a different note, I hadn't realized these were as late as 1899. I was surprised how similar the side rail marking was to one I saw on a 1902 Mexican (that got away). I will try to add a picture. Regards - Chris (aka Returnspring) |
