Mint, unfired 09 Argentine full rifle |
Lead | |
|
I was lucky at an estate auction last weekend and got a perfect, mint, unfired, unmarred, not even a greasy finger mark on it 1909 Argentine. This still had
the packing grease in the bore, chamber, the bolt and on the follower. Just the nicest 09 I have ever seen. Evidently been in a collection since mid-50s,
auctioned by the heirs. I hate to say anything about the 350 I bid & got it for.

Sounds like you got a great deal. Sure would like to see some pictures with it packed with grease and if you clean it up, after you are done. I have a couple
of rifles I've cleaned the packing grease out of and were unissued condition but I never got pictures before cleaning. It's hard to imagine and
describe what a good job the factory did packing each and every rifle. Some of the grease was really dried out and hard and took quite a bit of soaking but
not a speck of rust.

like that, but it hasn't have the grease cleaned off it to any degree. Is the wood on yours the light brown colored wood? I have seen several of the really
nice light brown walnut ones like that that are in new condition. Mine, unlike yours was about 500$ on gunbroker several years ago. I figured that I already
had an excellent condition 1909 that I like a lot to take to the range, so I didn't feel compelled to clean the one that had clearly never been cleaned. I
have some other such guns--a madsen that was full of grease, and the best, a 44 husky swede in the last 50 serial ever made that had factory grease on it, and
the swivels, etc, etc, hardened in place with hard grease. The bolt face was clean and had grease on it too. I'll probably fire the swede, but not the
other ones. A non shooter swede seems an anathema. The last unfired gun I have is, though not as exciting, possibly more rare in such shape than the others--a
45 kkale all matching perfect bluing and finiish and new looking rod, entirely packed with cosmoline from one end to the other.
I have tended to not do much with internal grease on these guns and minimal externally--have felt overall that if they were in that shape for anywhere from50-75 years with the grease in them, I might as well not be the first to take it out. Maybe one of my kids can or some young wippersnapper in eons to come. Can you send us a picture of the Argentine? I'd really like to view your new baby! Congrats on a great find and a GREAT deal!! Am presently doing inside house paint, carpet, new BR tile so no photos now. It is the light almost tan stock, but I disassembled the Argi and cleaned the
grease completely as it had rubbed off the bolt knob and was starting to have brown surface oxidation. I cleaned all the metal with #9 and it she shines. I
was amazed at the receiver, bolt and extractor when I cleaned the grease just looks like it was polished by hand with jewelers rouge.

I was given one that still had cosmoline in the barrel and bolt. Don't know much about these rifles. Bought some ammo but don't think I'll shoot
it. Light brown wood. The rear sight has an anchor toward the front portion. Maybe it is a navy rifle. Full length rifle. Muzzle cap, rod and everything but
the bayo match. Beautiful rifle. Only wear is a few scuff marks on the butt plate.

The anchor is just an acceptance mark and does not signify Naval heritage in any form. congrats all you guys on your super fine pieces. I have some very good ones, but nothing to compare with what you are describing! |

Since I started this thread 6 months ago, I just have to add: Of late at any function whether on the net, at GS's or even the small shops, the very nice
plus, and unissued 91's and 09's are getting scarce and very hard to find for under $350. The unissued Argentine's 91's are going for 650 up,
and the mint, unissued 09's both long rifle and carbines are pushing 850 and even higher. The fact that Paul Mauser hasn't made any for a while also
has a bit to do with it too. Actually they have such beautiful lines and great steel plus the deep bluing make them darn near irresistable to me. I have a wall
full of them and can't stop buying them. I don't see them depreciating in price no matter what the economy does.
