Romanian Single Shot Trainer (UMC Cugir) Questions |

Hello everyone, first time poster here. I recently acquired a Romanian .22 LR trainer rifle at a gun show. It is not the common M1969 model trainer, as it has
a different stock and the barrel is much heavier. It is marked on the barrel as a GECO 22LR, but I do not think this is correct because the GECOs I have seen
are German imports between world wars. The receiver is stamped with the UMC Cugir logo (looks a bit like the mauser logo) and the number 1951-02239 which I
assume indicates that it was manufactured in 1951 and its serial number is 2239. I took the gun to the range and put about 70 rounds of .22 LR through it. It
was pretty accurate despite missing the rear sight (I intend to put a scope on it eventually). The problem is that the .22 cases were expanding and I could
feel the blowback hitting my forehead from time to time. I had to dig the empty brass out a few times with a bigger casing. I know that is not a good sign, and
I imagine the receiver is worn beyond tolerances. I really like this gun and I would like to fix this problem, but I don't know what to do. I was
considering boring the gun for .22 Magnum as a last resort, but I don't know if that would be a safe conversion. Any advice or comments would be welcome,
as would any information about this particular model. They seem to be rare and I cannot find any information about them anywhere.

I remember reading of several owners having the same problem. On RimfireCentral are several threads about headspace problems in the Cugirs. Headspace may not be your problem, but you might check it out. Seems that a shim can be placed between the bolt body and the bolt handle to decrease headspace. I have a Cugir but have not shot it or examined the bolt in detail. Hope this helps |

Thank you very much for this information. I will do some digging over there. Hopefully I can get this firearm back into working condition, as I really like the
look and feel of it.
