Not sure what I have |

I received this rifle for nothing, a gent stopped by my friend's house and asked if he wanted an old mauser. My friend naturally said sure where did it
come from, and the guy told him it belonged to his brother who just died and was left to him, but he did not have a use for the beat up old rifle. My buddy
called me and asked if I wanted it, and of course I said sure. I think its a Spanish Lowe made rifle, 1893, converted to short rifle in 7mm, but I am not sure.
It has a bent bolt, roller coaster type sight, 22 inch barrel, the barrel and receiver match, but not the bolt. There is no crest on the rifle, just a serial #
on the left side that starts out L26XX. The rifle seems OK, but has been there and done that from the looks of it, the stock is fixable, its missing the floor
plate and follower/spring and ejector box. I plan to find the parts to make it operable, and have most of them here in the shop I think. The bore is not too
bad, a bit frosty but no pits, and the headspace checks OK. Does this sound like I am on the right track with it being a 1916 conversion to short rifle? I want
to make sure I am getting the correct type parts to put her back.

There were some 1916 Short Rifles made with the Roller Coaster sight. I think in the 1920's. HTH

sounds like you have an early m1916 spanish short rifle. the key is the rear sight, later models have the tangent type sight. may be a conversion of a long
rifle, but was probably manufactured as an m1916. mis-match bolt not unusual as the spanish
stored the bolts and rifles separately for good reason.(spanish civil war). should be easy to find the parts you need. good luck. |

Thanks for the help guys. I forgot to mention I will get pics up soon, as a before and after story on it. I am going to try to restore it, it has some light
pitting under the wood, so after a minor clean up it should look ok. I think it will get blued though, as needs the rust to be stopped where it is, I want to
keep it from getting worse, and keep it functioning well. If it shoot good enough, I might keep it as a boar rifle for my kids, if not it just becomes another
mauser in the safe.

Ouch, the pitting was worse than I thought. The bore is just frosted though, so I still hope to have a decent shooter. I worked it over today, and dug through
my parts and found all I needed to get her up and running. It will end up being a total restore though, as the pitting in some areas was deeper than I thought.
Here is the process I follow when taking on one like this one(I know most of you will frown on this but here goes), first I bead blast the whole thing, this
ensures the rust is out of the pits to stop it where it is, or at least slow it down. Next I polish the whole gun very carefully on wheels starting at 140
grit, and working down to 500. I make sure not to lose any marks, or change the barrel profiles or corners as much as possible, hence the need to blast first
if deeply pitted, where you cant get the pits polished all the way out. Next the gun is degreased at least twice, the I use Christy Bluing salts, as they give
a very deep rich black color, that I have only been able to get by rust blue other wise. The gun is then oiled and left to hang overnight. The results on the
metal are very nice looking, but the intention with this method is not to make it look new, just to preserve the gun for a much longer useful life.
I will post the before and after pics later, along with the wood work, which I am starting on later tonight. |

Please see my website at http://www.geocities.com/fritz125541/Spanmauhome for details on Spanish Mausers. If it does say Loewe
on it and has a 22" barrel and "roller coaster" sight, it was converted at some point.

I will get pics of the metal work up today. I have the before pics, and I will assemble it for the after ones. It has the tangent leave roller coaster type
sight, no names, a scrubbed ring, gas port hole, thumb cut, and 22 inch barrel. Its not a bad rifle, still cleaning up the bolt a bit, but it seems like its OK
as far as headspace and the bore is frosted, but not pitted with fairly strong sharp rifling. I am working on the stock between duracoat colors on some
customer tactical guns I am wrapping up this week.

The stock is now ready, so I will put her together tonight. I have been crazy busy, and sick for a few days so not a lot got done on this one. I wiped the oil
off the metal work last night, and finished another coat of oil on the stock, so now it has a nicer look, but not new for sure on the wood and metal.
