I glanced at it, thought it was an M91 because I saw the rear "stepped" sight and blade front. Then I noticed it was in a Finn 2-piece potbelly 91/30 stock, and the rifle was as long as the standard Soviet 91/30 refurb next to it. The price tag was $495, so apparently the owner knows what he's got I balked when I saw the price, and thought of the 7 M91's I alreay have, in addition to the as yet unfired by me Finn VKT M91, Tikka 91/30, and my hardly fired 1896 Finn'ed M91. I thought $500 was a pretty penny to add another Finn, but just wanted to ask if it was anything special. I may give it another look in a few days, I'm actually more interested in an old S&W .38 Model 10 or an early Glock 17 in the shop.

The other point of view is and it's sad to say the collectable Mosin Nagants are (currently) falling price wise as to what folks are willing to pay. Now Gunboards.com or Ted or notpc may say different as this may be a great find! (Heck I don't know as I'm pretty much a "happy go lucky bottom feeder"). I guess the clincher for me would be the stock. Is it a true "Dragoon" stock with the funky looking handguard? Or is it a Finnish replacement stock. Edit!! Ooopsy just reread your post (and it is in a Finn. replacement stock) and I wouldn't go any more than $425. (What is the bore like? All are bargaining chips!) It may be worth it. Just check it out good. Close to fve bills, it should be a darn goody. Draybo Edit also; I like the the old S&W's too. That's going to be a really tough choice! I paid more than your listed price for my Non original SA Tula Dragoon, I suspect much more than the going rate - I don't mind tho because I have yet to see another just like it. (Vic over at Gunboards says it was once used as a trainer...) Keep in mind somewhere around 5500 of these(including Cossack) rifles are floating around out there - Factor in bubba or well meaning but undereducated shooters & now trashed Dragoon rifle bores....I suspect the number of these left is in the darn near rare class... Pahtu.

I might, maybe try to haggle for the Dragoon. I can't swing $500 for anything right now, let alone another Mosin! If I were flush right now I might offer $400, if the bore was good. As much as I have attempted to be a collector, I realize I'm basically at least 70% shooter....a rarer Dragoon would be a neat find for the collector, but to my "shooter" side it's a $500 M91 in a 91/30 stock, that probably shoots the same as my other Finn M91's. Given that I haven't had the time to actually go rifle shooting in a long time, the prospect of half a grand sunk into a rifle that I would fire once or twice,and then would probably live for years in a space in my safe or rack isn't too tempting. Yeah, my Mosins have been "silent" for too long, I would love to go shooting everyday and fire them all, but at least until Aug. of 2010 or after another trip overseas, whichever comes first, shooting time is gonna be scarce. The old 6" Model 10 .38 Special is more in my price range....I do love those old 5 and 6" tapered barrel Smith .38 Model 10's and Victorys. Just handsome, no nonsense working guns.

Dragoons are not easy to find but I have passed up plenty of them due to condition or price. They come around. No reason to give in to a high price unless it has some extrordinary features. As early as the rifle is, it would have originally been produced with a flat rear sight and a handgaurd that wrapped around the rear sight base. If those features are there it's a $1000 rifle, if not see my earlier estimate. Additionally, the Finnish provenance actually decreases value. In the case of a piece such as this, a non-Finned example is much harder to find. So I am assuming, replacement handgaurd, replaced front and rear sights, Finnish markings. ~$250-350 depending upon condition and whether or not it still has it's solid bands.

I assume he's selling it as a pre-98 antique, because he has a few other rifles there marked as "antique no paperwork" like Vetterli 6.5 conversions. At least that would take the NICS fee out of the equation plus makes it easier for the owner to sell, less hassle and time = more likely to knock the price down if it's a "cash and carry" type deal. I'm thinking this is a consignment rifle and the gun's owner is pricing it high hoping for a "bite". I might tell the shop owner to tell the seller of the rifle that I'll offer $300 total and see what happens. The shop owner usually doesn't price his guns out of the ballpark like that, so I'm assuming it's a consignment.
