First Deer With My Yugo! |

I shot this doe this last weekend with my M-24/47. I used 200 grain Speer and she was at about 75 yards. All my friends believe you need a magnum for
hunting. All she did was drop in her tracks, what more could you ask for from a hundred year old cartridge?

A friend of my nephew bought a Russian SKS rifle right after he turned 18 years old. He practiced every weekend at the range that summer and got to know the
rifle well and became a good shot with it. That fall he wanted to go hunting deer with a bigger caliber rifle, as he thought the M43 cartridge was too puny for
deer hunting. I told him not to become one of the "bigger is better" people when it comes to hunting rifle calibers for hunting. The following
weekend he went hunting with the SKS and managed to get a nice five point whitetail buck with it. He said the range was about fifty yards and it dropped in its
tracks. He still had the deer in the back of his pick up truck and I can see why! A classic shot to the lower rib cage sent the small 124 grain hollow point
bullet tumbling. The deer was standing at about a 45 degree angle to him and that slug tumbled thru its whole insides, from the chest cavity to the hind
quarters before exiting the body.
I was amazed at the damage the SKS round created, as I had no idea that they could be so devestating to tissue. One shot, one instant kill on a hundred plus pound whitetail deer! This was with a small bullet, so don't go worrying about a larger bullet fired from any 8mm Mauser, even if it is the sick loads that are loaded by U.S. manufacturers. Curt |

390ish:
I tried to work up a load that would be dead on at a hundred and also at every other distance using the sights. I used 45.8 grains of IMR, Prv Partisan brass, CCI 200 primers, and 200 grain Speer projectiles. They shoot 1 inch groups (probably better but that's as good as I can shoot) about 2 inches high at a hundred. This is as close as I could get to my goal so in the future I might spend more time to get it perfect. I have only cleaned my bore about every 15 shots and have still gotten great groups. |

hey doveshooter:
which imr powder are you using? i am getting best results with 4064. at 46 grains, i am just breaking 2400 fps in my 24/47. i am using the same primers and bullets as you. have been shooting remington brass. have some norma, but have not loaded it. also notice that my throat is a bit short in this rifle. 0.025" under the speer book oal is touching the lands in my rifle. |
