Jimsails, while this may not address all of your questions you might find it worthwhile to read through all of the postings in the "Gew 88
'S' marking .318" vs. .321" vs. .323" "sticky" near the top of this page about various barrel sizes. In particular,
note that the "S" and "Z" stamps on the crest of your receiver do NOT specifically tell you anything about bore diameter.

I have found that slugging can be about as misleading as trying to figure out markings. If your bore is fouled and not clean you will get a bad reading. When I say clean I mean like a mirror. Have had .315 that cleaned out to .321 Clean is the word. If its not like a mirror get out the brass brush and have at it. Have never seen a clean one .308. But anything is possible with these old rifles Swede Nelson

Thaks for the advice | ||

Thanks for the advice. I'll made a diy electrnic cleaner based on the surplus rifle one. Poured brownish liquid out cleaned and repeated. The rifling
much clearer with some corrosion near exit. but looks serviceable and slugs to .318 to.322 depending on where I measured AROUND THE SLUG. Now to locate
cleaning rod and clip and off to the range.
