I've read of this before, and there is an excellent movie out about it. The name escapes me now, but it was a truly excellent movie. I believe the movie is
French and very well done.
There have been more than that one throught the years and the wars, but the Christmas Truce of 1914 is the most famous I believe. Merry Christmas! Eric

Perhaps the combatants simply didn't hate each other enough? Or nobody explained to them what the war was really about? I still don't know what WWI was
really about, other than a continuation of Europe's 19th century wars. "The war to end all wars" was probably polite propaganda to get us Yanks
to fight when we didn't know why we were there, either.
I'd like to think this will serve as an object lesson to the new administration to "count the cost" before sending our troops to fight where we do not have serious national interests at stake - particularly to try to settle some other country's ethnic squabbles (Bosnia, Kosovo, Somalia, Islamic factions in the Middle East, etc) that have been running for centuries (it never works). On the other hand, we need to be prepared to confront (and anilhilate, not negotiate with) true threats to liberty and life. Crunch |

Amen, brother. Eric

WW1 was about setting new national boundaries - a "land grab" on a huge scale. Started with the Austro-Hungarian Empire using the assassination of
Archduke Ferdinand as a "reason" to grab Serbia, despite Serbia's submission to AH's demands. Germany saw opportunities to grab huge parts of
Russia's empire and the dominos toppled.
