One question I have is a good source for resonably priced brass. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'll post some pics as soon as I download them from the camera.

New guy with new 96 |
Lead | |
|
Hi all, just the new guy saying hello with a range report on a new-to-me 96. My lovely wife saw me eyeing it up at a local shop and gave me the green light on
it as a late christmas gift. I knew the reputation of these rifles as my father has a 94 with all matching numbers that he has had for years and shoots like a
dream. Well, took the 96 to the range yesterday and with real "el cheapo" ammo managed to shoot 1.5" groups at 100 yards. They were about
8" high, so I plan on getting a replacement front blade and then working up a good handload and filing the sight down till it hits about 1" high at
100 yards.

Welcome to the Boards
All the main manufacturers now make the 6.5x55mm Swede and if you check for sales at places like Midway you can sometimes get bulk deals on brass at pretty good prices. I think Winchester and Remington brass generally goes for around 50 cents a case in lots of 100 but if you catch a sale you can do some better than that. PRVI Partizan sells a decent loaded round that has a good reloadable case in 6.5x55 for about 70 cents a shot, so that isn't too bad of a deal either, and sometimes bulk purchases can get you a break as well. Great guns, good luck and good shooting! |

Welcome to the Swede Forum,
While the initial price for the brass is higher Lapua is most likely the best and contributes greatly to accurate loads. It has the correct case head size for the Swede round. Norma brass is good also but is more expensive than the Lapua. The posts about rounds loaded using Lapua brass have shown them to last for a long period of time. This helps cut the cost per round. Winchester does well also but the brass is bases on the 30/06 case head size. Still if you only neck size the brass it lasts too. I don't think it lends itself to the same accuracy as the Lapua but if you just want plinking ammo it's a good buy. Remington brass would be my last pick...Jim |

Thanks for the info on the reloading brass. Are the Privi Partisan ammo cases reloadable or are they just a shoot and dispose kind of case, ie. cheaply made?

Recon 14,
I believe the privi brass is boxer primed and can be reloaded.

It is, it can, and I think the brass is pretty good!
Think I said all that in my earlier post. |

An atractive rifle and it appears to shooot quite well too. It does appear to be very shiney though. Still for any rifle, with open sights, to shoot 1.5in
groups at 100yds. the shooter and the rifle are very good...Jim

I think someone put a few coats of Tru OIl or something similiar onit in the past. I think one of my summer projects will be to remove the Tru Oil and tone it
down some with a nice satin hand-rubbed oil finish. I just have to finish the stock on a flintlock I am building first....not enough room on the workbench for
2 stocks at once!

And thanks for the shooting comment. I still amaze my 16 year old son. He grew up with scoped rifles but I grew up when only the rich could afford a scope, so
you learned how to shoot iron sights. It's nice to know that even though he can outrun me and is 3 inches taller then me...I can still beat him out on the
range with open sights. Good thing is that he is a good kid, studies hard, is active in sports, loves the outdoors...and already reloads his own ammo. He's
very precise and his handloads for his 7mm-08 are very accurate. Sorry...justa proud dad ranting.

I think removing the Tru-Oil is a great idea. I would suggest using BLO (boiled linseed oil) as this is very close to what the Swede's originally used. A
50/50 mix of BLO and mineral spirits does a great job and dries quickly so you can place multiple coats on in a relatively short time...Jim
