And on the Gulf of Finland some 1 kilometer from the shore end 90s. There was no snow on the ice avt it was realle slippery. I didn't have spikes under my boots and next day groins were really aching.

Brrrrr!!!! That looks really cold!!
We don't get enough ice here in southern Indiana, maybe once every 3 or 4 years for a week or so. Since the fish aren't used to the cold, they act real sluggish in winter here. Looks like you did pretty well in the top picture. |

Hello,
I'm glad to see an ice fishing post here. I live in Northwestern Pa. and the ice is just coming on the lakes. We currently have 4" to 8" on most of the lakes. Next weekend will be our first time out this season. A two day trip to camp. Bass, Pickerel, Perch, Crappies, and even a few Lake Trout. A small State run lake on Friday called Shagger's Inn and a Army Corp of Engineers Lake called East Branch on Saturday. I'll give you an update when we get back. This is an major annual event for our family group, we love to see ice covered lakes. 4" of hard clear ice is all it takes! Best regards, Al |

Some links about ice fishing:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_fishing This was the biggest contest here but the organizers were then fined for violating lottery tax law. It has not been organized since 2005: http://www.lyytinen.fi/Mi...apilkki%202005/index.html |

Ice fishing, my favorite kind of fishing. The ice becomes safe for walking on the lakes near Ely, Nevada in January. My wife especially enjoys it.
BTW, Mosu, you Finns really know how to make ice augers. I'm talking about the Nils, of course. I've seen and used other brands, both hand and power operated, and they don't compare to the Nils. My 4-1/2 inch Nils will cut through 12-15 inches of ice in less than 20 seconds. I don't need anything larger, as I've never caught a trout that wouldn't fit through that size of a hole. My biggest complaint was cold feet. I finally bought a pair of U.S. military Mickey Mouse boots this year and WOW, are they warm. They are somewhat bigger and heavier than most other cold weather footwear but not awkward to use. Have fun and be safe. |

I had cold feet too. My boots are summerboots. Fellow had Nokia winter boots wirh separate( better to dry) inner stockings. The boots hade even spikes. Yelous,
but the cummiboots were desinged especially for heavy duty use in winter.

I posted on this forum last year about spear fishing through the ice. Here's an excerpt from the Wisconsin DNR about the recently completed spear fishing
sturgeon season...
The Lake Winnebago sturgeon spearing season closed Saturday, Feb. 21, after running for eight days. Spearers took a total of 1,512 sturgeon, including 301 juveniles, 615 adult females, and 596 males. Those totals include harvest from Lake Winnebago and the separate Upriver Lakes seasons. The upriver season ran five days and closed Feb. 18. Sturgeon history was made on day two of the season when a Menasha woman speared a 168.8 pound female sturgeon out of her shack on Lake Poygan. It was the largest fish ever harvested by a woman spearer, the largest fish ever registered from the Upriver Lakes, the fourth largest fish by weight on record and the sixth longest fish on record. This season, 4,031 people applied for the Upriver lottery; 500 licenses were authorized and 490 Upriver licenses were sold. There were an additional 9,749 licenses sold for Lake Winnebago, bringing the total license sales to 10,239. That's less than a 15% success rate for these folks who sat out on the ice for hours waiting for a sturgeon to swim by. I go fishing as much to enjoy the outdoors and the fellowship of friends, and I don't think I could enjoy that while shivering from the cold. I guess I've become an old wussy. Mosu, you can keep your frozen lake. ![]() ![]()
