I can understand that some conversions would need the notch due to the new rounds being longer eg 8x57 to 30/06, or 7.62x53 to 8x57 (magazine lengths were okay though) but why in this case? Were they designed for the notch from the start? Was it a standard arrangement at that time? The 98's only seem to have the notch on conversions.
Edit: oh sh, I just read you post more carefully. I didn't realise that they were also made in 7mm - can you post photos?

"Parallaxer". I always wanted one of the 6.5's but the 7mm is so much more attractive since cases are relatively easy to obtain.
