I can understand that some conversions would need the notch due to the new rounds being longer eg 8x57 to 30/06, or 7.62x53 to 8x57 (magazine lengths were okay though) but why in this case? Were they designed for the notch from the start? Was it a standard arrangement at that time? The 98's only seem to have the notch on conversions. Edit: oh sh, I just read you post more carefully. There are pics in Ball's Military Mausers of the World. They look like the original long rifles except for the Brazilian crest and FPDF on top the receiver. All are 4 digits with no letter. JL

If you ever feel the need to sell one of those 7mm's to a local, I'm your man. I have 7x57 reloading dies and components and need a rifle as an accessory to accompany them - I guess that classes me as a "Parallaxer". I always wanted one of the 6.5's but the 7mm is so much more attractive since cases are relatively easy to obtain.

I am finding it impossible to get ammo for this rifle. I am able to get 6.5x57 though. Does anyone know if it is possible to use this ammo in the rifle or can anyone point me in the right direction where I can get this ammo in South Africa?

They just gather info and have no clue where to get ammo. A friend gave me a 6.5x57 round and I tried it in my rifle. The round does not fit. The bolt does not close. Does anyone know what the difference between the 6.5x57 round and the 6.5x58 rounds are? I do not even have an old 6.5x58 cartrage so can not check the physical differences. If this rifle did not have any family history I would get rid of it for I am now getting frustrated. This rifle was issued to my grandfather who fought in South West Africa against the Germans so it has been in the family since brand new and I have not seen another one in such a good condition. It looks like I will have to go the forming my own brass and reloading route.

Take a look at the first page, I have added a cartridge dimension table and the 6.5X57 is 0.005 larger at the shoulder then the 6.5X58. You could try to force and so fireform it! Wolf

Depending on the bullet you are using, and the throat condition of yor rifle, OAL for the .43 Spanish is typically in the 2.835 to 3.000 inch range. A typical load will be a case full of 2fg black powder, likely about 65grains, or just enough that light compression gets you to the overall length that you are trying to achieve. I've shot mine once, three rounds as I recall, and they were within about 2 inches at 50 yards. That must have been six or seven years ago. Too much has been going on in the intervening years. I formed my casings from .30-06 commercial brass because I have alot of it and didn't have to worry about ruining some in the reforming process. I had to turn the necks to get them to the right diameter. I also have one of the reworked to 7.92 x 57 examples that is in excellent condition with a mint bore, almost perfect bluing, and really nice stock. It came from Burns Brothers and I forget how many years ago; maybe 9 or 10? Carl

The target I posted was one of the better ones I'd shot. Often I get clusters like that with one or two strays. Old military rifles will tend to do that as a result of metal/stock contact and changes that occur over time I guess.
