What exactly would be the process to resize the .308 to 7mm-08. I have a lee turret press, 7mm-08 dies and all the other goodies to load up plenty of rounds, but I don't have much 7mm-08 brass.
Thanks for any info!

.308 to 7mm-08 |

Beginner question here. I have access to lots of .308 brass, but I have a 7mm-08. I am correct in that a 7mm-08 is a necked down .308? I have just begun handloading and have loaded and shot a dozen or so rounds for my 7mm-08.

I'd hang on to that .308 brass. Some folks are finding .308 ammo is becoming hard to find & expensive when found.
I think all you would have to do is run it through a sizer and you should be set to go, there may be some case neck issues in regard to being too thick. Hopefully a pro at resizing brass for that caliber will chime in. |

Keep the .308 and buy 100, 7-08 cases from Midway when on sale. You'll get at least 10 loads each if careful. So thats 1000 reloads. I used to use the 139 gr Hornady but switched to the 145 gr Rem CL. Just as accurate and cheaper.

I agree with the two other posts, the 308 brass is going up in price and I would keep it. However, I have used 308 brass to create 243 Win cases. I lube the cases, set the sizing die for 243 by using a 243 case, set the lock ring, and then back off the die several turns. Load a 308 case in the press, raise and lower the ram, as I make small down adjustments on the die. Finally, when the die has made the final small turn and the lockring is seated on the press you are done. Keep in mind patience is necessary and don't get to aggressive. Military brass is thicker than commercial brass, it may be necessary to aneal the shoulder and neck. I do the anealing by filling a metal shallow container with about an inch of water, heat the neck and shoulder with a propane torch till red hot, then tip it over in the water. Allow plenty of space between each case so you don't have a domino effect. If you are using military cases remove the primer with a primer remover before you start the necking process. If you have any other questions this forum is a good resource.

I reload for both 308 Winchester as well as 7mm-08. A 308 Winchester case will full length resize into 7mm-08 with out any problems. I know this because by
accident a few of the 308 Winchester cases got sorted wrong. I did not notice my mistake until after they were sized and trimmed. My guess is that I'm not
the first one that has done this on their reloading bench. That darn Winchester head stamp seems rather faint but that is why I was fitted for trifocals last
Fall.

Until I got in a good supply of 7mm/08 brass I too sized 308 in the 7mm/08 FL die. I've got a boatload of 308 so using 60 or so didn't put a dent in
my supply.
