Upon closing the bolt, the gun will fire. Everything worked fine when I bought it from the local gunshop over a year ago. I was at my father's home range one day, and it fired when I closed the bolt. I was really shook up when it happened. Luckily I had it pointed downrange. After unloading, I noticed it would fire upon closing with more frequency, until its at the point it does it 4 out of 5 times. In my search to narrow down the problem, I pulled the bolt from my Finn and put it into the Russian, and it would still still fire upon closing, however very rarely. (when I say fire I dont mean with ammunition, I just wanted clarify that) I really like my Russian, its very accurate, and I would love to be able to shoot it again. Any help on solving my problem would be greatly apreciated. Thanks, Randy

I once bought a Hungarian M44 that had that very problem; the rifle 'fired' everytime I closed the bolt due to no resistance the trigger offered.... Fortunately I returned it within minutes of the purchase (I had buyers remorse anyway so everything turned out ok)... Strip the gun down and look at the trigger mechanism would be my advice... -Palimino

Loose or broken sear screw can cause this among a couple of other problems in the area noted above. Just removing the bolt and observing the action of the sear and trigger from above should give you a clue. Good Luck! Bill

Posts: 23 (01/08/09 11:47 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I agree also that the problem more than likely is in the sear/trigger spring. 1) The screw has worked loose and just needs to be tightened. 2) There is a build up of 'gunk' between the trigger and the sear spring. I'd suggest removing the sear spring, trigger then thoroughly cleaning everything, including the receiver. Reassemble and see is the problem still exists.

Posts: 1013 (01/08/09 06:34 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Sort of had that happen with a T-53 once, didn't fire but the cocking piece started closing when I rotated the bolt closed. Turned out the trigger spring/sear had fractured at the thin spot, fell apart when I removed it. A reminder to me to check these old guns out on occasion.

Posts: 5280 (01/09/09 08:48 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	These things happen with anything mechanical, could be that a worn out or bad part was installed during the refurb, and it might have taken a year for the wear to get to the point where it failed. Hopefully it's just gunk or a loose screw, but luckily replacement sear-trigger springs are only a few bucks.

If it is loose this will happen. If there are any shims between the spring and the receiver this can cause the problem too. One way to adjust trigger pull is to shim this spring. Too big a shim and the rifle will fire upon closing the bolt.

Well, I tore it down, and replaced the trigger, sear spring, trigger pin, and even the sear screw. The problem did not go away, but now if I carefully close the bolt, it may not fire. (as opposed to just about everytime before) So its still not right. I did notice that both triggers I have are very loose and wobbly. If I could find a safe way to tighten them up, it could solve my problem. Any thoughts on that?

I would say the next place to look would be the bolt in the cocking piece area. Have you checked the firing pin protrusion? If that were way off it could fire the weapon I guess on closing but I have never seen one that far off to tell the truth. I would say disassemble the bolt and look for excessive wear or broken parts and go from there. Let us know what you find. Good Luck! Bill

Could be the angle on the cocking piece is "bad" for mating with the sear or its downward extension is too short to accomodate the vertical slop. Next, try replacing the cocking piece. HTH, Regards.

I tend to think wear may be the culprit but then in retrospect I picture someone grinding this or that to improve it! I have one sear that was on a rifle I bought for parts that has been silver soldered back together after it broke! Yeah sure! Bill

I got the chance to mess with it again. The bolt parts do feel like they fit together loosely, when compared to my Finn M27. Some of the edges look too rounded, but not from wear, more like it was over-polished. Its hard to tell what is going on when I close the bolt, but no matter what I do, I cannot keep the the trigger from pulling itself. Putting a block behind the trigger to keep it from moving rearward does not stop it from firing either. I bought this rifle from the local gunshop here in town, it had all of the paperwork and accessories from Century, so I would guess (but can never be sure) that I am the first US owner. I really liked this rifle, but it may end up as parts.
