At lunch I stopped at a shop I used to visit a lot. Thier surp ammo selection was slim. They were selling, or trying to sell, 70rnd bands of Turk 8mm for $29.95! I remember buying about a case of the stuff back in '03 at Cheaper than Dirt's retail store in Ft. Worth when I was working down there for $4.99 When I returned to the St. Louis area a few months later I saw the price was up to $7.99 which was HORRIBLE I thought.....

Posts: 11647 (01/09/09 10:08 PM) Forum Site Moderator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	RLM, if it is any concession, around here, the shops carried that Turk ammo for $29.99 back in the early 2000's....and they'd give you a price break/discount if you bought two or more bandoliers....the price break dropped it to $19.99 each. So it was like buy two bandoliers and get one free @$60.00! And they'd even "throw in the sales tax on it too. Fortunately, I was picking up shotgun news at the time and knew better and never bought any of it, but it was still sickening to see that much mark up on a $4 item and even more so that people were buying it like it was going out of style.

I always counter with asking him if he ever tried loading a rifle with those stripper clips, and the answer is unvariably a "no". Those stripper clips were the most pathetic thing ever made. After doing my share of fighting with them, I finally sat down a couple times and removed all the rounds from the strippers and put them on Yugoslavian stripper clips, that are wonderful. It also gave me a chance to visually inspect every round for loose bullets, cracked case necks and such. Curt

Curt Only about a quarter of my Turk 8mm came on those worthless one-piece stripper clips. Half of it came on some pretty good two-piece brass colored clips. And another quarter of it came on really nice nickel colored clips, some of which had German markings. And lets not forget those high-class Parisian buttons and buckles that the Turk bandoleers had. __________________________ "Oro En Paz, Fierro En Guerra" um, yeah, right.

I replace them with the yugo strippers and the brass ones go into the salvage bucket. Parisian buttons??? ooo la la!

I did the same, pulling shells off to be loaded one by one. Some of the bands i bought were of the polished steel 2 piece variety and worked great. I have a bunch of them saved if i can ever make enough handloads to fill them up. I havent seen any surp 8x57 that is priced good enough to make me spend some of my reduced funds.

Some said it had hard primers but I have an M48A that loved that stuff...and the stripper clips were the best I have ever used. Freedom is not free. The price is very high and it never goes on sale.

Posts: 5309 (01/14/09 08:54 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I guess $60 for 140 rounds is a deal to some new shooters, used to $20 per box of 20, but most of us are more "jaded" and remember when this stuff was so cheap it was virtually free. Oh yeah, I still have two screwed shut wood cases of the Ecuadoran, and still more in loose boxes floating around. Very hard primers, you had to try it in all your rifles and see which ones would touch it off on one hit. Most of my M48's will do it, and my Turk 38 had no trouble. The R/C K98 needed two hits to fire on the Ecuadoran, very frustrating. This is the ammo that started the "Ecuadoran MG ammo" gun show myth, "it's got hard primers to prevent slam fires in a machine gun" I have so much of the Turk left I'm afraid it will rot away before I get a chance to shoot all of it, but in spite of numerous offers to sell or give it away, I'm keeping all of it! I also have a basket full of the strippers from the Ecuadoran and the Yugoslavian. I saved the strippers with the intent on reloading them, but usually I don't bother at the range. If the ammo is loose, or like the Turk, I just take them off by hand and single load them. I don't really "rapid fire" my Mausers so loading with stripper clips isn't a concern for me, but it is fun to load up the way it was supposed to be done. It also looks impressive at the range, to pull out a 5 round stripper, click-claclakclk-ping as you close the bolt and send the empty stripper flying forward. I remember when all the 8mm stuff was so cheap, I would buy 3 cases of the 50's Yugo just for the nice stripper clips. Now, it's absurd people on GunBroker are even selling empty stripper clips for like $5 per 20! I'm like wow, I must have 500 of those things sitting around in a box, and who knows how many more still loaded with ammo. Last Edited By: stantheman1986 01/14/09 08:56 PM. Edited 1 times.
