A) How important is this part to actually using/firing the weapon?
B) What is it called and to whom would I turn for a replacement?

Picked up a Faz No. 4 Mk2 at a local auction. It is missing the screw set in the stock above the trigger. It seems to be related to holding the butt in
place. Anyway, I haven't seen the part description in any schematic nor in any disassembly instructions. Nor have I seen a listing on any of the on-line
Enfield parts providers. Of course I might not know it if I did see it.

You mean the cross bolt in the forend? I wouldn't shoot it without one as it may crack the stock. Mine is missing the nut, but I still have the bolt. It
has been a safe queen for a while until I can score a replacement.

That's part of my problem. I don't even know what the thingajig is called. It may be a bolt with a standard screw head on it, and it appears that
there may have been a nut on the opposite side. As I said it is(was) located above the trigger and ran thru the stock. To the best of my knowledge the bolt
can only be found on No. 4 & No. 5 Enfields. I have never seen one on an SMLE.

Obtain Small Arms Identification Series (S.A.I.D.) No.2 ".303 Rifle, No.4. Marks 1 and 1*, Marks 1/2, 1/3 and 2". Nice IPB and ID. You are referring
to the "tie plate" and "Rivet, tie plate", I think. Not related to holding the butt in place but as a strengthening of the back end of the
fore-end, cross-wise to avoid splitting of the fore-end wood. No "nut", just a rivet secured, right to left/left-to-right and no, they were not used
on the No.1/SMLE. I've not seen a No.4 without the tie-plate and rivet and can only wonder why they would be missing from a standard piece of issue wood -
a "bare-bones" replacement fore-end might well be missing these parts.

If it is indeed a riveted part it is odd that this gun would be missing the piece since every part is #'s matching including the stock. Thanx for the
advice. I will try to find the SAID for a No. 4. Apparently there is a local WWII re-enactor that has knowledge of Enfield's. I'll have to see if I
can run him down w/rifle (and FOID) in hand. Actually, it'll have to be securely enclosed in a fully zipped case stowed in my trunk separate from the ammo
as I live in Illinois' Kapitol.

I believe the screw/nut you are referring to is the one that replace the riveted one on the No.4 Mk1 when the Mk2 with the new trigger assembly was fabricated.
I bought one of these because mine was missing also.
I bought mine from Evans Obsolete Screws: http://customscrewsandmore.com/ It was an exact piece and fit and worked perfectly. Evans Obsolete Screws is a gold mine of Enfield parts! Steve |

I'll second Scott Stonehill he has made me some great screws for a project.
