I'll throw the fat on the fire-the M-1 Garand. Yes, it's a Great Rifle and I think the only thing Garand didn't get right
was designing it to use the BAR magazine. But "Greatest Battle Implement Ever Made"? It seems to me our sucess in the ETO was in large part due to the Red Army and to the fact that the "Greatest Warlord of All Time" couldn't understand concepts such as elastic defense, giving up terrain to preserve forces, not underestimating your enemies
and understanding that while a Supreme Commander must insist that his orders be obeyed, he should also listen to his commanders, take them into his confidence and recognize that the man on the ground if often the best judge of the
situation. In the Pacfic, an enemy who likewise had contempt for us, couldn't understand that other nations could have a warrior spirit even if they had no Bushido code.
And the basic US military philosophy is to use ordnance and munitions rather than bodies. I read of the WWII General Simpson that as an artilleryman he believed you never send a soldier when an artillery shell will do and in Bradley's memoirs he complains that because of the failings of Comm Z they could never use as much artillery as they
liked. Add to that soldiers coming from a culture where there is no automatic defence to authority, no concept of blind
obedience to orders, an army that it seems to me relies more heavily on its NCOs that any other (except maybe the British), where initiative and aggresiveness are encouraged but not to the point of stupidity. And of course, the belief that you win by making the other fellow die for his country.
Yes we can thank Mr. Garand for his vision, his dedication, his perseverance, but the Marines who landed on Guadalcanal were armed with M1903s and it seems to me they did just fine. Would our boys have been that handicapped if they all had had M1903s (or M1917s)?

Just kidding, just wanted to add some humor with the most obscure rifle I
could think of right now!
. I
would have to say the ar-15 (m16, m4, I don't know
) is probably
one of the most overrated guns ever (I just really dislike this gun , I don't know its just my opinion
)
.
