7.62 X 39 vs .30/30 |
Lead | |

If used in a single shot like a NEF how would the .30/30 compare to the 7.62 X39? I hand load and want a moderate center fire accurate to Minute of Coyote to
around 50 yards. I have some 125 gr SP bullets that were supposed to be .311 & turned out to be .308. This would be a good way to use them up. I load JSP
.311 110 gr pistol bullets in my Enfield & they work pretty well.

The 30/30 and the 7.62x39 are comparable in power levels. As for accuracy the 30/30 isn't known as a match grade cartridge, however it is supposed to do
rather well in a rifle that has a nice tight chamber.
The issue with most rimmed cartridges is that their chambers are usually on the generous side (deeper that required) so it is sometimes difficult to get exceptional accuracy. If, for example, one would examine all the Enfield sniper rifles, I'm sure that they have a chamber tighter than the average Enfield. Same with the 30/30, however I would encourage your trying it and working up a load. Eric

At 50 yds on a coyote, I doubt that MOA accuracy is important... My guess is that the coyotes will be sorry to see them coming. On the other hand, how do you
get to within 50 yds of a coyote?

yes, as eb in oregon said, they are compareable in power levels but the 7.62x39mm ammo is cheaper, and because it is a spitzer, shoots flatter than a round nose 30-30, and since you reload you could turn either into a real tack driver, just be sure to neck size only and slug the diameter of the bore(if 7.62x39mm because mini 30's have a .308 bore, and .311 ammo wont shoot good in it(for example)). if you reload alot, you could load more 7.62x39mm with the same amount of powder than you would with a 30-30, because of its case shape and size it uses less powder to acheive the same velocity(smaller capasity, more powder gets burnt faster) |

Comments on 30-30:
It would be informative if you took a chamber cast or examined a fired case in the 30-30. 30-30s are sportsman rifles and should be tighter chambers than ones found in Military rifle. Neck sizing will improve accuracy and consistence of any rifle, especially a rimmed cartridge. Sizing the neck will result in head spacing on the shoulder and the cartridge will be centered in the chamber. As noted, bullet tip limitations with tube fed magazines. |

Considering the short distance involved, I would lean toward the 30-30. 7.62x39 may be cheaper but a 30-30 with a 150 or 170 grain bullet has put many a game animal on the table. Mike |

Coyote close | ||

The trick isn't getting close to the coyote, it's the coyote getting close to me. They have taken chicken within a few feet of the house! I had a
coy-dog come up & look at me every afternoon when I was just out of the hospital. When I could move around I straped on a .357. He took off & never
came back.
