Bill, I assume the HB FAL is still a good bit lighter than the BAR. But, it's pretty clear both rifles (as manufactured for the military) are for the same
purpose. Can you give us a comparision on strengths/weaknesses?
I've never fired a BAR, but I would imagine the trigger has to be better than the FAL, based on the trigger on MY FAL. |

Bryan, the Izzy weighs 15.5 Lbs empty vs the BAR @ 21 Lbs empty.
Strengths of the Izzy HB are; Trigger is similar to the M1/M1a but with more perceived creep. Mine was good but I had to replace it with USA marked parts which were horrible before I honed the sear to smooth it up. At this point it is still not even with my M1/M1A's but I will get it right eventually. ease and quickness of disassembly/ reassembly for cleaning etc, excellent ergonomics, handling & carry in spite of it's weight, ease of dropping empty mags and reloading, easily adjustable gas system reliability. Weaknesses, must have screw driver to adjust windage and a tool to fine adjust elevation to register the rear sight to match markings. also, the rear sight slide inherently has some lateral play. This can be improved by careful tweaking/refitting the elevation slide to the base. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The BAR's strengths from my experience is; Trigger is M1/M1A in feel. In other words perfect for a battle rifle. excellent accuracy, excellent adjustable sights (but windage adjustments are too coarse at 4" moa clicks), elevation adjustments are fine, easily adjustable gas system excellent stability from shooting prone off the bipod even in full auto fire. Weaknesses; Slow and complicated to disassemble/reassemble for maintenance or cleaning. heavy and clubby feeling, (not a problem in full auto however) noisy through your ear muffs with the recoil buffer spring's "sproing!! with every shot. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Both have an excellent "cool factor" and will draw much attention at the range with the BAR getting the lion's share of it.

Thanks for the info, Bill. I didn't realize the BAR had the recoil spring in the stock.

Nice lookin piece, Bill. They are very cool.
Bryan, The BAR recoil spring is in the slide. The "buffer" assembly is in the buttstock. The rear of the slide smacks the buffer when the gun is fired, absorbing recoil. I have had an Israeli HB FAL (Springfield Armory) as well as the BAR. The weight of the HB FAL is mostly all out front. I found it uncomfortable to fire from the shoulder for this reason. The FAL is very nicely balanced and easy to handle as a standard rifle, but the HB is a different animal. The BAR is just heavy "all over". It just feels like a big ole heavy rifle. Not that the BAR isn't very heavy to shoulder fire as well, but it doesn't feel like the weight is all out on the end. Bill, I heard no noise whatsoever from the BAR buffer when firing.

Thanks for the clarification, Bob. I really like the FAL I have, but the BAR wins in the "looks" department.

No doubt Bryan, the BAR has alot of "charisma". haha But I agree with Bill, the HB FAL does too, but the nod goes to the BAR.
I think the main reason my HB FAL and I didn't get along so well was the fact that it was very short (for me) in the length of pull, badly crowding the rear sight. The "shortness" of the butt and slim, light profile of the receiver made it seem like there was a heck of alot more rifle and weight out front. It was a beautiful piece tho. Pristine condition. I'm VERY careful (totally anal) with all my stuff and whatever dings or scuffs any of my stuff has, you can bet they weren't inflicted by me. I sold that rifle to a good friend who is a retired police chief from my hometown. When he came and picked it up, he pulled up in his Cadillac, and we shot the breeze for a few minutes. When it was time to leave, he popped the trunk on the Caddy and proceeded to toss (yes....toss) the perfect condition rifle in the trunk like an old set of golf clubs. My knees nearly buckled!
