And if the barrel was actually removed, it begs the question as to why a new barrel was'nt installed at that time.
Any historical factual date here, guys?

MODELO 1912 Question, DocAV are you out there? |

I understand the converted Steyr M-1912's were actually rebored instead of rebarreled to cal. 30-06 from the original 7 MM. cal. Since I can only assume
that this was an economy measure, if indeed it was, then was this accomplished somehow with the barrel still attached to the receiver?

I don't know about .30-06, but many were converted to 7.62-NATO in the early 1960's.
The Long-Rifles (both model 1895 & model 1912/60) were converted by boring out and re-rifling the bore, then silver-soldering a chamber insert in place to shorten the chamber to 7.62X51 NATO. See Link Here: http://dutchman.rebooty.com/1895Chile.html These are considered to be somewhat suspect for safety & reliability, but most folks agree that they are OK with reduced pressure handloads. The model 1912/61 Short-Rifles were converted by using U.S. surplus Springfield model 1903/A3 two-groove .30-06 barrels which were shortened about 1/2-inch on the chamber end (to shorten it to 7.62-NATO), then rethreaded for Mauser threads, then re-profiled on the outside to the "stepped" Mauser profile. The original 7X57 barrel was removed, and it was replaced with the modified Springfield barrel. These are excellent shooters, and many are found with virtually new, and unused barrels. -Bean

Sorry, but I've shot mine a half dozen times with 30-06 ammo, handloaded down to 13 gr red dot (see articles on "The Load" reduced velocity .30
cal loads), substituting the original jacketed heads for lead, much as I use in my '03's and my '08 Mausers and my Garands since the old shoulder
started wearing out.
It's a fun, accurate, well balanced rifle with plenty of "patina" and history. I'm guessing that they possibly went to 30-06 at the end of the conversions to avoid the chamber insert issue, as outlined above. Thanks for the info. |

I have one each of these in 7.62x51 Nato. Both are great shooters. Never had an issue with the insert on the long rifle. You are right about the 03 two groove
barrels on the short rifle. The one I have looks almost new.

I'm not familiar with any in .30-06, but if DocAV happens along, he'll know if anyone does...

Silver Solder? Why do you think silver solder? The referenced article suggests soft solder, I.E-lead/tin solder, not silver solder. Plumbers solder was the
most common solder ever used Mauser rifles and most firearms for that matter.
