what to do to tame the muzzle blast?? |
Lead | |
|
Anyone have any idea of how to tame the muzzle blast of these fine Mosin Nagants???? Enjoy shooting them-- just kinda tired of the guys at the range
commenting about the muzzle blast. Would love to see if anyone has come up with a way to tame it....

Use a M91/30 or M91. The cartridges are designed to be used in a longer barrel (than the 20" carbine) to develop full velocity. About half of the powder
burns outside of a short barrel, accounting for the flash. Even shooting in the daylight won't always "chase" it away!
The flash is just part of the "sight and sound" experience. Enjoy it. They're just jealous!

Tell the other shooters that they need slower burning powders and shorter barrels? Ever sit at the bench next to the guy with an "overbore" rifle?
.338 shooters should be mandated to shoot between two MN carbines.

What to do about it?! Enjoy it!
It's even better when you use
Albanian ammo and get a big muzzle flash. Carl

Whats the problem? You shoot what you brung. Is there any restrictions as to what you can shoot? What about the guys shooting a semi that showers hot brass?
The guy using a big bore handgun off bags to sight it in? How about a guy sighting in his slug shotgun? Oh and the worst, the guy shooting his muzzle breaked
gun. Whether for recoil or accuracy they are LOUD. Tell these guys to stop CRYING! It's a GUN RANGE!

To me, the bigger muzzle flash and the louder boom, the better! Throw in some generous amounts of recoil and that will separate the whiners from the true
milsurp devotees. A semi-regular guy at our range calls me the cannon shooter when I show up with either my M-44s or M-91/59 carbines. He has no reason to
bitch, however, as he shoots a ported .338 magnum and is always experimenting with new loading receipes for it. He blows away targets laying on the shooting
benches on either side of him and knocked down a guy's chronograph who was shooting in the next position a couple years ago. I think he is just jealous, as
no matter how loud and miserable he loads for that cannon of his, he can't get the nice fireball like I can out of my M-N carbines with milsurp ammo. I
really ticked him off one day when I finished shooting the M-44 and drew out my Czech CZ-52 handgun shooting Bulgarian ammo. That little hand cannon also puts
out a very noticable muzzle flash, so I rubbed it in!

Print this on the back of your T-Shirt:
"Crybabies Fear my Muzzleblast" Anyone commenting that your Moose Nugget is too loud, just point to your back.

Sounds to me like your club is full of "liberal sissy's" that don't appreciate a member of the C&R crowd. They probably support
"reasonable restrictions" on firearms too. Nuts to 'em.

When they complain about your M44 go to the truck and bring the new Hakim you just bought out there for a few shots. That will send them scurrying for the car
no doubt! Try to find some of the old Russian ammo for the M44 that will really scatter them as it is really hot ammo and a bunch of fun to shoot at dusk.

Why would you WANT to tame the muzzle blast? That's half the fun!
Tell 'em to move over to another bench and quit whining...Pantywaists. usrifle |

They are supposed to wear hearing protection, don't they know that.
They would not be on the range I go to with out it. Hearing protection is like most anything else, different levels, don't they know that also. Just like $$$$$$$$$, the more you get the more you need. Always been that way. They are "so" out of touch. ![]() ![]() skd

My son 19 year old Marc, who incidentally arrived at U. S. Army Fort Jackson, South Carolina last Tuesday, 1/27/2009 to start his Army basic training[His MOS
is going to be Army Intelligence Analyst], and yes, I and everyone else here is extremely proud of him. always absolutely loved the comments when he touched
off a shot from his M-44 Mosin. He would just smile when the other shooters said"what the hell was that, a cannon?". He also loved the muzzle flash
and even the recoil. So use it as the Russians did and enjoy the historical experience.

I did my basic there in 1960, it snowed in March and while on the firing range.
Lay the M-1 loaded clips on the sand bag and by the time you got to use them it was a cake of ice over ammo. ![]()
We made it ok though.skd |

PAgunman wrote: Your kidding right? Half the fun is the muzzle blast and a fireball the size of a washing machine. Your not going to tame that. I'd just load some more Bulgy HB in my M38, give them a real fireball and blast show and enjoy it. If a REAL rifle bothers them, then maybe they should be at the .22 range. I have had the same thing said to me on occasion. I simply tell them it is a stock Russian rifle and ammo, yea, it's loud............... and............ yours isn't? Got ear plugs? |

I was thinking of trying to tame the muzzle blast because of using it for hunting ... I hate shooting the gun under the roof at the range --it holds the sound
in--- enjoy it more when not under the overhang. I enjoy shooting all my Nagants...the 1891, 91/30s ( have 25 of these) 91/59, M44s and all my other C&Rs
.... Just thinking if I can tame the blast ... might make it even more enjoyable.

I can assure you that when you are touching off a round while hunting and the sight picture contains a nice buck you are not going to feel the recoil or even
hear the rifle going off! It is when you worry about recoil and noise that it gets to you.

Are you wearing ear muffs over ear plugs? That makes it impossible to hear anyone complain about your Mosin's muzzle blast.
![]() ![]() It also tones down the blast too. Give it a try. My range
day headaches went away after using both ear plugs and muffs.
Honestly it seems like over half of the newer hunting rifles at my local range are quite a bit louder than milsurps. |
