My goal is to have a representative example of a rifle from every MAJOR combatant in WWII, i.e. axis and allied. So I am looking to get a German, Italian and Japanese rifles as well as a US, British, and Russian. rifle. No carbines, or off models, just a good representation of what may ahve been used by that country. Currently I have a #4mk1* Enfield manufactured by Savage, a Mosin-Nagant 91/30 Hex receiver Izzy manufactured, and a 42 marked (Mauser Oberndorf) 1940 Mauser Kar 98k. I am waiting until I get my C&R 03 FFL to qualify for a DCM M-1 Garand (So far I have waited 2 months). The question is which Japanese rifle should I get? I have researched that quite a few Type 38's were still used in WWII, however the Type 99 was developed to replce the 38, and was "officially" the service rifle of the empire during the US period of involvment in the war (12/1941). I have found what appear to be excellent shape Type 38's for around $250.00. The type 99's I have found appear to be rough, have several pieces missing ( AA wings on the sight, bipods, sling swivels, etc...) and are going for anywhere from $300-$400. I read a thread here about "...buyer beware", and it was mentioned that $300 was too much for a Type 99. So my question is which type is "most" representative of Japanese Emperial rifles? If it is a Type 99 where can good ones be found for reasonable prices? What should I expect to pay for a representative bayonet to go with either the 38 or 99? I have Bayonets for all of my rifles so far. I am just looking to determine which one is the better representative example. I'm just looking for opinions. I know everyones got one. I have the exact same goal as you do, and so far have almost identical collection started. I have a 1943 BSA Shirley No 4 Mk 1, 1939 Izzy 91/30, 1940 243 Mauser, and an as yet unknown SA M1 Garand currently in process at the CMP. You shouldn't have too much longer to wait for your C&R. Mine took about 3 months because my state sat on it for a while. You can email nlc@atf.gov to check the status. They were quick with a response when i was checking on mine.

Only T38's were in use till about 1942/43 when the T99 began to show up. So the choice is yours. Nice T38s are harder to find than nice condition 99s, either can run from $150 and up, with $250 perhaps being an 'average' price for an average or slightly better rifle. A bayonet with scabbard, from $75 to 125, maybe $150 with frog. Many bayonets will be more, as there are some scarcer varieties; same is true of the rifles. A T99 with all the bells and whistles, i.e. pod, rod, wings, slling can run well over $600 on auction. Co-editor of 'The Japanese T99 Arisaka Rifle' NC

So, the early conflicts would have been the 6.5's and the later ones would haver been predominantly 7.7's. I think that answers my question. I have several .3XX bore size rifles. #4, 91/30, K98, M1, etc... so a 6.5 would be a different round. I have always had a soft spot for the .264's. Then I guess maybe a 7.35 Italian to round things out. mrhatch: Cool! Someone else getting in the same collectors bug. Did you get yours in the same order as you wrote them? I did exactly. I think I will put an order in, once I get my C&R, with the CMP for an SA or HRA M1 Garand. What Italian rifle are you looking at? PM with the response, since we are Nippon Jun currently. Also PS for anyone, I can try my hand at reading some characters, as I lived in japan from '85-'89. I am not fluent but I can figure some things out. Thanks - BamBam

All machined parts (at least for the pre-WW II rifles) while the the Type 99 included stamped parts from day one. The Type 38 was used throughout the war, it was never removed from service. The Japanese needed every rifle they could get their hands on which meant that '38's were used up to the end. I myself don't have a '99 yet as I'm being a careful shopper and looking for the best I can afford. I've been looking for the earliest '99 I can find that is in very good condition with an intact 'mum. I'm also debating with myself about having to "gear up" for another caliber.
