US Service rifles |

The US Service rifles "bug" has finally bitten. I never really anticipated getting any US serice rifles, =too expensive. A friend gave me an
M1carbine (Saginaw W/ early features except rear sight) that was missing the bolt a few years ago, that was my first US rifle. I obtained an AR this weekend,
and now am in the hunt for a "03", M1 garand and M1A ( and maybe a P-17 ). I really loathe the fact that US rifles are harder to get than foriegn
arms and why US rifles are so $$$. I guess you get what you pay for.............

U.S. rifles are simply not out there in the quantities of some of the imported rifles such as Mosin Nagants, Mausers and the like. Remember the U.S. destroyed
a lot of them and that only made the surviving rifles more valuable. Still, some of the prices asked for the U.S. rifles is a bit blown out of proportion in my
opinion. And the current buying frenzy this country is going thru only runs the prices up even higher. Good luck trying to find a P-17, however, as they never
existed. They are properly called the U.S. Rifle of 1917 or for short, M-17. The P stands for Pattern, which is a British term and the M-17 was derived from
the British P-14 rifle, but it is an entirely U.S. development, different caliber and everything.

Do you know about the CMP? Civilian Marksmanship Program.Check out their web site for their forums,and sales page.I agree about the price of US rifles,not
cheap,but they hold their value.I Got my Inland carbine,SA Garand,1903,1903a3,and my model of 1917 from the CMP.They come in different grades for different
budgets.Most arent collectors items,but clean up,and shoot well.To top it off they ship direct to you,no ffl involved so you dont pay their mark up,and
transfer fees.If your going to shoot 30-06 rifles the CMP is the best way to buy ammo,250 rounds for 68 bucks.You wont find a better deal than that for this
round.

M1,
Oops youre right M-17, I might be able to find a P-17 ( 17 action in a 14 stock ) I've been collecting for about 13 years, and only now am I getting into the US stuff... ??? Its a shame that our country destroys or exports all of our "old" service rifles..... I guess it more profitable.... Irishsteven, I know the CMP and what they're all about, but there are a few "hoops" to jump through to be able to qualify to "buy" from them. I guess it would be worth it though..... Trust me, I have been drooling over everyone elses CMP purchases... |

Daryl, are the Krag and Springfield carbines towards the bottom the real deal?
Would you mind posting some better pictures of them?

The "hoops" aren't as bad as you think. I have a little thing stuck to the top of this forum about how to buy from the CMP.

brass rat, Yes, they are, to the best of knowledge, they are correct or "the real thing". The krag model of 1899 has a reproduction top hand guard. The Trapdoor U.S. Model of 1877 carbine is not in the best of shape but at least it is not a cut down rifle. I put off buying a Trapdoor carbine for a long time because there are so many good looking fake cut down rifles out there. Sometime you need to buy from a reputable dealer.
I don't have any good pics of the Krag, but I will email you what I have if you like. I do not want to hijack this tread.
Gunrun73, Be Careful, The collecting US rifles, leads to bayonets, knifes, helmets etc,,,,and god forbid handguns.

But WE NEED CHANGE!!! If I was president,there would be a CMP rep at every out process center of every branch of the US Armed Forces. "Would you like to
accept a weapon of your choice along with 500 rounds of ammo as a small token of service from the US Government", he would ask. {m-1
garands,carbines,m-14,m-16,m-4,handguns,etc, would be on the request list }. If so,sign here,here,here,and here. Delivery will be to your home of record in 4-6
weeks. But then again,who would vote for me and for my way of thinking, sigh !

Daryl: GREAT stuff! Trapdoor slings have got to be scarce. What is the caliber of the trapdoor and the rollng block below it?
|
|||
Daryl FL |
|||

The trapdoors are 45-70 and the rolling block it 50-70. The slings is old but not military.

U.S. service rifles are more and more expensive, but you can still put together a pretty good representative sample of almost all the major service rifles
of the 20th century without too much trouble. There aren't that many models, and most are still available. Prices may look steep, but think what they
will be in 25 years!

Wait a while and you can get these cheap - from my heirs who don't have a clue about gun values!
