7.62x54r hunting reload recipe |
Lead | |

Im having a friend reload for my 7.62x54r and he's never reloaded these b4, neither have I. He would like to know what is the best bullet, powder
measure...everything for these. Im pretty sure im gonna use winchester brass and he will probably use the CCI primers. But what grain and diameter bullet would
be about the best for whitetails. Im think 180 grain speer's. If anyone could help me out with reloading these I would greatly appreciate it.

just buy lee 7,62x54r dies and it comes with all the info you need to start
*bullet diameter is .311 not .308 unless you have a finnish mosin then slug your bore for the correct bullet diameter |

Make sure your dies come with the proper expander button. Some some with .308 and .311. others with the .308 only. Lee loads are on the mild side. For data go
to the Hodgdon site. Better yet, grab a bunch of loading manuals and compare one against the others. IMR 4064 would be a good all-around choice for powder,
though any medium-burner would work OK.

Cannot help with hunting loads as I load for target shooting with mid velocity.
The Lee 7.62x54R dies come with a .308 expander which is tight for .310" bullets. When seating a bullet I will partially seat, turn the case and seat a little more etc. to keep it centered. You can order the .303 expander / decapping rod separate and use it in the full length sizing die. Lees load data is on the light side. Check Hodgdon and bullet manufacturers web sites for load data, Lyman's manual lists loads that are closest to actual results. All of my Mosin-Nagants prefer .310" jacketed even those with large grove diameters. |

Not putting any other maker or dealer down.
I ordered the RCBS 7.62x54 die set from Graf & son's and it came with both 308 and 311 expander. Rock on. ![]() skd

Yeah my buddy needs the RCBS die's for his set. I just told him a 308 bullet would work, but maybe not, he uses them to reload 30-06s and he said they work
just fine. Im guessing 308 bullets r .308 diameter? Seems like everyone here recomends .311 bullets. And for the record I just have a russian m91/30. Nice gun
to.

Need to slug the bore and eliminate all doubt.
Seems these rifles vary in bore dia. more the most. I slugged 2 different sizes in three rifles. There have been some reports of some shooting 308 with no problems, mine don't. I do 311 and 312. skd

I should have contacted Lee. I purchased the .303 expander / de-capper pin but have not tried it yet.
It appears both .308 and .311 pins come with the RCBS die sets. Reports indicate the .308 de-capper is small for the .310" bullets and the .303 expander is to large resulting in a loose fit. Mosin-Nagant are based on .310" jacketed bullets and in my experience with M91 through M44 they work best. I have tried .308" with terrible results however many here have great results with the .308, it depends on individual rifles. Bullet fit in the M-N is counter to conventional wisdom, I have long noted they will turn in very good accuracy with bullets much smaller than grove diameter. I have a M91 with .314" grove diameter that is quite accurate with .310" jacketed bullets. Why the M-N is this tolerant is a puzzle to me. Checked MidWayUSA and found these comments on the RCBS dies http://www.midwayusa.com/...uct/?productNumber=660339 |

RCBS 2 die set for 27.99??? O.O wow...gotta tell my friend about those, they're cheap! Now just to slug out my bore. How much do gunsmiths usually charge
for that?

Order a shell holder if you order the RCBS dies, RCBS dies do not come with one.
