A 1917 8mm Mauser engineer's carbine made at Spandau I bought in 1973. I still have it and have only seen one other like it since.

The rifle..a Mk4#1 Maltby....bought it to hang on wall. discovered Tuco's forums and took it down to shoot....the rest is history...Really enjoyed the
second golden era of milsurps....up to around 03 or 04 when the river of rifles started to dry up and all the variant's had been represented...Checked the
"box" yesterday and all I had was an even dozen...all the best shooters from the collector period...now I am back into shootin at least once a week
and enjoying it even more..

Mine was a Turk from SOG. If I remember correctly, they were $39.99 with a bayonet included.

Number One: while rooting at a garage sale around 1987, I asked the lady if she had any guns (just an impulse...after that, I have never failed to ask). She
led me to the den closet and told me her husband had "Brung this home from the war." A really cherry ca. 1943 Tokyo-made Arisaka Type 99 with a
bayonet, scabbard & frog. The mum was intact, bore shiny, nice stock (no duffel cut); all the desirable stuff. I gave her two twenty dollar bills after she
asked for one.
Then: she showed me an old sepia-toned snapshot of a couple of kids under some palms, both tee-shirted and hefting rifles with bayonets mounted. A Japanese flag was spread on the ground. Of course, one was her late husband holding my Arisaka. I regret that I didn't arrange to copy that photo. In the mid 80's many scoffed at Jap rifles and I was informed, with great authority, by a Mauser enthusiast I worked with, that I would have the bolt impaled in my skull with the first shot. At a friend's farm, I tied the thing to a spare tire and ran a clothesline cord from the trigger to a nearby sapling and around to a spot behind my truck. The round pulverized a cinder block 100 feet away. Best shot I've ever made with it-! That Type 99 is a real hoot to fire but the ammo is mighty precious. One of these days I'll grab a Type 38. |

In 2002 I bought an M48A. Got all hyped after reading a magazine article (some survivalist mag someone gave me) about Mitchell's Mausers. However, no local
FFL's wanted to receive an order for a reasonable price. So I found an excellent M48A at a local shop with all accessories and a nice walnut stock for
about $220.
Sweet rifle that shot outstanding. Eventually I bought an Israeli K98. Then I got a C&R license. Then I got an RC K98, so I sold the Yugo. Have bought 4 SMLE's since then (kept 1), a CMP Garand, and a Swede M38. Also a couple Mossberg M44's. Crunch |

Aubullet wrote:One of those Zouaves was the first gun I bought for myself except that was early 70s. I was bagging groceries for a $1.00 an hour, scrimped and saved for 6 months to shell out $126. (That got me the rifle, powder, caps, cleaning rod & some tips, a modified powder can cap with a pistol cartridge soldered on for a pour spout, and a few other odds and ends I no longer recall. Oh. And $5. to my Dad for gas for driving me out to the place. (It was a fair distance away and dad didn't trust either me or my old Chevelle to make the trip alone.)
But my first "milsurp"? Define, 'first.' My first C&R but not a milsurp was an old beater, wall hanger Spanish .43 Remington Rolling Block dad gave me to 'play' with when I was about 15. I'm afraid I put varnish on the stock to make it 'look better.' About 15 years ago, I bought a model 1916 Mexican carbine (I think it was) with the intention of, uhh, sporterizing it. But it just didn't seem right and I never did. Now 'first' as in starting to collect them, specifically, that was a Mitchell's M98/48 that was no German rifle, ever, but a Yugo M48bo. (and I had been
looking forward to that crest, too). That was for my 13th anniversary and we just celebrated 20. Only this time it's no rifle but a Longbow that I
haven't gotten yet.
So to define 'first' as the start of collecting these, it'd be that M48bo. Val Forgett helped many a lad down this long road I'd say.

M-48 Mauser I bought at Sunset Sports Center for right around $119 as I remember. I still have it and it is a good shooter although I haven't shot in 2 or
3 years.

39 dollar Turks, been all downhill or uphill, however you choose to look at it.
Wouldn't change it a bit for all the friendship and experiences. |

Technically the first "mil surp" I fired was a commercial Norinco SKS my Dad bought back in 1991 or so, new for abut $80. Still got that one too,
it's a rattle trap but shoots well. My first "military type" weapon that I got to actually "own and care for" was an Armi San Marco
repro Colt 1860 Army ordered from Gander Mt. mail order way back in the early 90's. It broke back in 2000 or so and I didn't have the knowledge at the
time to fix it, so I got rid of it, but I fired it a lot. I have since gotten back into the BP percussion revolvers in a big way, I always say I owe it to that
ASM repro for getting me started on it, since I recently quickly got a "mini collection" of both Pietta's and Uberti's.
Back in 2000 I asked my Dad to buy me a rifle, when I was 20 and I was a sophomore in college. I didn't have my FID card yet and didn't even know what a C&R was. From looking through the pages of SGN I had the need for a military rifle. Went to a gun shop in Woodbridge, NJ where my grandma lived, and they had a pretty nice selection of milsurps. I picked out a 1909 Argy "Mountain" carbine, which I later found out was a Gibbs "importer refurb" and had the bolt buffed, stock shellaced etc. A pretty rifle though. I shot it lots with surplus crappy FMMAP 7.65. I just recently sold it, but the wide-arc bent bolt and magazine live on right now in the 1909 Argy long rifle parts gun I bought that needed a bolt and mag. I got 20 rounds of surplus with the rifle and took it to college with me, and kept it in my room in case I found somewhere to shoot. I never did, but later put a lot of rounds through it, the first milsurp I did a lot of shooting with. A few months later when I got my FID card I took the old man to another gun shop and bought a refurb M38 Mosin. Lovely shooter, sticky bolt though, I still have that one and never plan to sell it. So, the M38 was the first rifle I bought with my FID card. |

Back in 1966, I bought an Enfield #5 Mk1 Jungle Carbine, soon to be followed by a Nazi Army model HSC Mauser. I currently have neither; when the boys later came along and began to toddle, Mom requested that I sell them (the firearms) for safety sake........neither the Pit nor the Bro have ever gotten over it and never fail to remind the old man of what I had done... Should have sold the boys

Like so many others---the old 1891 Argentine Mauser. $19.95 back in 1962 from Ye Olde Hunter. The aluminum handled bayo was $1.95. Stiil have both. Also have a
Lyman Ammunition Maker reloading kit in 7.65.
My younger brother bought a 95 Chilean for I think $12.95. We may have been the most heavily armed 13 and 11 year old boys in Georgia. |
