I just put an NOS barrel on a Swede M38. Now I need to blue it. I've heard great things about Brownell's Oxpho Blue, but the Hazmat charges to order one small container roughly triple the cost. I can buy Blue Wonder locally. Is it any good?

No blue is any better than the preperation. The surface condition, polishing, traces of case hardening or solder from sights can cause problems. Most regular
blues look best with a high polish, cold rust blue no more than a 600 grit. And amateur polishers usually round surfaces and wreck stammpings.
No cold blue is as good as a hot blue or rust blue Most cold blues get the blue color from Selenium Sulphate, a copper compound which causes corrosion. Oxpho-blue has phosphoric acid that prevents the usual corrosion. Blue Wonder supposedly doesn't have the Selenium Sulphate but the website doesn't say what it has except it's so wonderful that if it wasn't for the "Defence of Marriage" act I'd marry it. Caveat Emptor. http://www.bluewonder.us/BlueWonderGunBlue.html |

Double-check with Brownells. I've ordered several pints of Oxpho-Blue from them over the last few years (one pint at a time), and I don't recall any
Hazmat charges.

Crunch,
The inventor of Blue Wonder is usually at alot of the gun shows here in SE Texas and I've witnessed him doing the bluing demo and applying it in person. I have to say after 3 coats, it leaves a very deep blackish bluing that most people come away impressed. However, I'm not endorsing it, just reporting back what I've seen. Regards, NM |

I've tried Oxpho and the other flavors sold by Brownells and Blue wonder is MUCH better and if done properly will not wipe off with gun oil or CLP during
cleaning, which can not be said of the Oxpho products.
My results have varied a bit with BlueWonder but it is capable of doing a pretty much perfect match of existing military blue. |

Here's another product supposedly better than Blue Wonder or Oxpho. If the ad copy is true I'm divorcing Blue Wonder and marrying Rugged Gun Blue (tm
Shooter Solutions)
http://shootersolutions.com/gunblue.html Seriously I haven't had any problem with rub off on Oxph Blue as long as you dont just pile it on and expect a deep black. I finish it with a rub with extra fine steel wool and motor oil. But in my opinion its still nowhere as nice as a hot blue, just cheaper, and doesn't rust easily. When it runs out I'll try something else. |
