I'm wondering if these are metric?
It's a beautiful rifle and very accurate!

M96 Cleaning Rod/Nut Thread size or pitch question |
Lead | |
|
My cleaning rod only threads in only a few turns as there is a bit of mis-aligned metal in the stock-nut. AKA the treads are slightly buggered up. I would
like to chase the threads in the nut. Does anyone know the size and pitch of the M96 cleaning rod and nut? The rifle is a 1899 Oberndorf. I have carefully
taken the nut out of the stock and can see the treads that need correcting. Both the rod and nut have crown acceptance stamps on them if this makes any
difference.

I believe they are old " Mauser " Whitworth threads . Pitch & size is unknown to me ????? They are not American SAE , standard British Whitworth
or Metric !!!! Mauser used his own " thread pitch " base on the 55 degree Whitworth system , like we see in the large ring Mauser receiver thread ,
1.10" x 12 TPI ( 55 degree Whitworth ) .
This is a good question that I would like to know myself . Not likely you will find a Mauser tap & die in the USA . Brownells does have the receiver taps & dies , but I cannot find any other sizes . Maybe someone from Europe has the answer & a supplier . |

I have one reference that claims the ramrod thread is 35 tpi. But my thread gauge tells me that it is 32 tpi and that the outside thread diameter is .154 which
would be within the typical tolerance range for an 8-32 ANC bolt. Certainly an 8-32 nut will screw right on the ramrod of a M96 in my collection.
It should be noted that a metric M4 x .8mm thread is also within the typical tolerance range of an 8-32 ANC bolt. Hope this helps.

Yes , the pitch is 32 tpi , but an 8-32 tap measures .165 which is to big . If you tap the stock nut 8-32 , the cleaning rod will be way to loose . The metric
M4x.7m/m pitch is equal to about 37 tpi , so that will not work for the 32 tpi either . Have you noticed that Hoppes used the 8-32 thread on their cleaning rod
accessories ? Then we see Outers cleaning rods with an even smaller thread . I do not know the thread size ? I would think a long time gunsmith would know what
the correct Mauser cleaning rod thread size is ?

Let's try this again. The metric near equivalent would be M4 x .8mm, (not .7mm) which comes out at approx 31.75 tpi which is plenty close enough to 32 tpi
to have either work for the other over any span less than an inch or so, and my ramrod is only threaded for just over 1/4 of an inch.
4mm is approximately equal to .1575" and the ramrod threads O.D. at approximately .154", but they are worn some and they were cut on a .160" diameter step in the ramrod's shank which is otherwise .175" O.D. or about 4.445mm which somehow doesn't seem all that metric. The nominal O.D. for an 8-32 bolt is .164" but the new bought 8-32 bolts I have in by parts bin measure between .157" & .161" O.D. and the 8-32 nuts fit on them just fine. The 8-32 nuts that I have also fit on the end of the ramrod just fine. Now if you can find an M4 x .8mm tap, it will be a non-standard item, and I promise you will pay a premium for it over a standard NC tap of approx the same size. If you are worried about opening the threads up too much in your nut, just don't run the tap in past the tappered lead so you will clear any burrs without going in to full diameter. Better yet, just get a hardened 8-32 (or M4 x .8mm, if you can find one) bolt and run that into your ramrod nut to clear the threads and save many dollars over buying any kind of a tap! Good luck!!! |

I gently used a standard 8-32 tap on the stock nut, it did not require much pressure and the 8-32 nicely cleaned out the threads.
It may not be the "exact" tap but it worked fine with no damage to the 110 year old part. Thank you everyone for the help! Kenny |

The local Ace hardware down the street from me carries metric nuts and bolts and the guages to use to check out sizes. Chances are you have a like resource
around you.
