First thing I would like to know is did they shorten the barrels of VZ-52's to make the 7.62x39 52/57 model or did they install new barrels. If you have both rifles this would be easy to tell as the 52/57 should be about 3/4" shorter due to the difference in case taper between the X39 and X45. I have read that this rifle after being modified to 7.62x39 did not have the accuracy of the original 7.62x45 loading, is this true? Thanks, Smokepole50

I think (don't know for fact) but it apears to me to have a completely different/new barrel, not a shortened chamber, nor one with an insert/sleeve.

I read a post last night that indicated the X39 barrels had chrome plated rifling and chambers. If that is true then the barrels must have been changed and the twist rate could also have been adjusted just a bit for the slightly slower X39 round. I have a friend with a bunch of these rifle actions without stocks in poor to good condition. Many of them have worn out muzzles and need something done to them or they are good for nothing except robbing parts. I know the barrels can be shortened but I am still wondering if it will shoot well with the X39. These are just parts guns that were purchased in bulk from century, the few he had that were worth restoring in original X45 are gone. Smokepole50

If you could score some decent x39 & x45 mags and small parts out of those other left-over rifles, we could trade on those x45 dies..... The only way I know to tell if a rifle will shoot decent or not is to actually shoot it, try different loads, etc; before writing it off.

I still have a few 52/57 barrels and I used one to convert a junk 52 to a 52/57 so I could have a plinker...then I wound up buying a 52/57 so I have two now! Here they are and I got a repo stock for the 52 as it was cracked pretty bad. Just need some final fitting and it will great...that and I need the internal buttplate....your buddy would'nt happen to have one of those in his parts pile would he??

He has a few beater stocks that have the internal butt plate and no external butt plate but I do not think he will seperate the stock parts and the patched up black painted stocks are not cheap.
