DOES ANYONE HAVE REAR SIGHT SLIDES? |
Lead | |
|
I just got a bolt from for my 90 Spandau. The final parts I need to make it a complete rifle are, rear sight slide, Cleaning rod, and en-bloc clip. I
received my bolt from TNGP last week. I know Numrich has repro rods and clips so what I (and I am sure the rest of the GEW 88 owning free world), am looking
for is a rear sight slide. anybodyout there know of a source? What are they going for when you find them? Also the stock I received was complete but with a
crack though most of the wrist that was field reoaired with a largec screw from the bottom up. This is functional but I would like to glue the crack. What
glue works best and what is the best way to prep the wood for the glue/epoxy?

Jimsail: The bad news is that there is no known regular supply of rear sight sliders to be had, Sadly, finding one of these is -- at best -- a "pot
luck" proposition. As is always the case, the price ultimately depents on how much someone thinks they can charge and how much you're willing to pay.
That being said, when they were still showing up now and again on eBay some months ago, they were selling for more or less about $30 each (sometimes more). My
only reasonable suggestion would be to periodically look through the Gew 88 parts listings on GunBroker.com and see what turns up (forget eBay -- they're a
waste of time these days). Buyer beware -- too many people remove these by simply pulling them off the slide ladder and this will tend to
"spread" them as they are forced over the small retaining screw at the top edge of the ladder. Also -- some sliders have a worn "tooth" and
will not "catch" on the serations along the side of the ladder. While they may have some comestic appeal, be aware that they are functionally
useless. For general shooting (unless you're into long range shooting), using the fixed "V" sight and flip-up battle sight should suffice for
most applications.
I have used Gorilla glue (being careful to firmly clap this and let it "cure" for several hours) to mend various breaks in Gew 88 stocks but I'm sure other forum members may have additional insights on a better product or approach. |

PLEVNA,
Thanks for the info. I'll keep looking. Do you know if a 71/84 slider is compatible? |

I was told by a qualified member that they will fit and look correct yet will not lock-up in position. A cosmetic fix.
I paid high dollars for one which had gotten "spread". I was not happy. |

Folks: It is NOT my intention to "rain on your parade" but I would make two quick observations.
(1) According to Board rules , ongoing auctions cannot be discussed in this Forum (I don't make the rules, please feel free to confirm this). (2) The referenced rear sight mount, blade, and slider assembly is for a Turked Gew 88/05 rifle. This sight was intended for use with the modified spitzer ammunition which had a different ballistic trajectory from the "round nosed" ammunition originally issued for use with the Gew 88. The long and the short of it is that this is NOT the correct slight blade and I do not believe that the slider (IF you can remove it undamaged from the "Turked" sight ladder) is appropriate for use on an "original issue" Model 1888 rear sight. (I apologize for stepping on anyone's toes here but there's little to be gained by getting the wrong part for an otherwise careful rebuilding effort). |

I have an 88 with en-bloc loading and no cut in the top forward of the receiver but I have the S and the Z stamps for spritzer. I still need to slug the
barrel though. I have the ladder and only need to move the slider. This should work fine. I was the ebay mail BTW. I will avoid discussing auctions in the
forum, thanks for the reminder.

Jimsails, please be assured that I was not "grousing" at anyone with my comments. Based upon everything I have read in this forum regarding barrel
dimensions, it would be well advised to slug the barrel you want to use. It seems that many arsenels were rather foot loose and fancy free with changing
barrels through the years and the best way to know with any certainty what you have is the tried and true process of actually measuring its bore.
BTW -- be aware that the modified Gew 88/05 rear sight does not incorporate a "flip up" battle sight and does require a different hinge pin to attach it to the rear sight mount. I would note that I have examined several Gew 88/05 rear sight blades and the small retaining screw I previously mentioned appears to be ground off as part of its production process. The retaining screw is very difficult -- if not downright impossible -- to remove without severely damaging or destroying the slot in the screw head. |

I just pick up a sight/leaf/tube on ebay. thanks for your suggestions. Does anyone know of anyone selling original clips and or cleaning rods?

Jimsails: Unless Gun Parts Corporation might have some in stock (to my knowledge the clips and cleaning rods they routinely sell are reproductions), your best
bet on locating original clips and rods is to regularly examine the offerings on GunBroker.com.
BTW -- I've recently prepared a short article for the forthcoming (March 2009) issue of The Military Rifle Journal about makers' marks on Gew 88 charger clips. Frankly, as my research on this topic progressed, I was very surprised to find 30 different clips for Gew 88 rifles (and I am confident that I overlooked some along the way). Of these, 29 marks appeared on these clips and some originals were not marked. As best as I can tell, Spandau made clips (marked by an upright "I") seem to be the most common based on the sample I have seen. |

I got a barrel tube w/complete sight on EBay. soaked both sights in liquid wrench a few days. held the leaf iv a vice for stability and used a gunsmith
screwdriver. screws backed out w/little or no damage. sight transferred to leaf and reassembled. Hooray. Now I need cleaning rod and en bloc clip (preferable
original) if cleaning rod is not available does anyone have experience with the numrich repro???

Jimsails: That is good news! You're moving right along toward completion! Excluding the reproduction charger clips sold by Numrich and some other
companies, I'm not aware of anyone who regularly stocks these. To find one, the best I might suggest is to keep looking at sites such as eBay,
GunBroker.com, and AuctionArms.com. I have seen several listed in the past few weeks.
An option is to purchase some of the reproduction clips and look in this forum for Swedenelson's sage advice on how to "doctor" these to function in your rifle. I have no personal experience with the reproduction cleaning rods offered by Numrich and must defer to others to address this question. |

I have two reproduction rods. They are good quality and work as per the originals. Just give them a good brushing and cleaning. One I left "new" the
other I aged to match the rifle. I was pleased with the results. Now to find out how to straighten a bent receiver rail.

No, I had one like that and it was an easy fix. This one looks like the receiver was twisted a little. I'll send picture and full discription when I get
home. Thanks
