I had a medical conference in Orlando, and decided that with all that's going on in my life right now I needed a vacation. I've had no time off in about 8 months. So after the conference I met up with a couple of friends and rented Harleys and rode down to Key West. After a couple of days there (rented a Cessna and toured the Keys by air!) rode all the way up to Knoxville, Tennessee and explored the Smokie Mountains. Great trip! The perfect antidote to my pending divorce. Those of you guys who live in the Southern Appalacian's have it made. Great country! Florida, not so much. Strip Mall Hell or swamp for the most part... The Smokies are wonderful. We had great weather too. Bill, when I was in NC I was on the Harley. I just rented a Cessna while in Key West for an hour. Not Milsurp related but I'd be happy to share some pics later when I get some time. I would not mind living in that North Georgia/South Central NC/TN area a bit. It was as pretty as Kalifornia in many respects.

If you live in this area the jobs pay more especially around Raleigh, Charlotte, Greensboro or Winston Salem and when you are ready to take some time off you are only 3-4 hours from the most beautiful & highest mountain range east of the Mississippi and 3-4 hours from the best fishing or vacationing beaches on the east coast. The Outer Banks are beautiful and the fishing can be the best anywhere. It's also the home of excellent offshore fishing. I wouldn't leave this state for any other than maybe to retire to the farm in upstate SC. The desert suits me OK for now. I have amazing friends here, and a successful practice beyond description. I hope to keep my house... I have an excellent volunteer job on the weekends at a free clinic for the working poor that can't afford insurance, but make too much for assistance. I think this is where I'm supposed to be right now. That said, I don't want to spend the rest of my life anywhere I can't ride my motorcycles year-round... Someday.

There is much more to the story--but it came from a beautiful woman who had everything in life--but was dying from MS. So: Be successful. Side note: My ride is now back from the wrench--already had Andrews cam, Mikuni carb, ignition, pipes...so I added SE pistons, and some head work...I built a torque beast for the mountains. Say the word, and I'll show you Idaho, Eastern Washington, Western Montana, the Blues in Oregon.....on either 2 or 4 wheels. If beauty is the objective; let's just say I've done an awful lot of traveling....when the Cheapfamily takes a vacation, it's typically no more than just a few hours away! ...and firearm friendly?--c'mon, we're Idaho! Weather is springlike and the daffodils are blooming here. Nothing like a good baked steak, mashed potatoes, and corn dinner with salad and a spot of tea for less than $10 with tip. Then I went and bought another 54 gun safe from my local Heritage dealer. Life is good Doc! Enjoy it! Bill ELT

I was still a poor uni student and only had a trail bike (road registered) for transport. I used to literally sling a gunbag on my back and ride to the local range (about 15 minutes away). I never got strange looks (no more than usual anyway). On windy winter days (mild over here - no snow) it was somewhat interesting as the gunbag acted a bit like a sail and the bike tended to wander the road a bit. Those were the days - I used to actually enjoy getting rained on in summer (non-range days of course) - helped cool you down.

Sometimes with a Garand over my shoulder. I bet that does not occur too much in the city! Like it was stated, I AM where I want to be, in many ways. I just get the winter blues a little. My blessings are manifold. The divorce is a bump in the road. I'll get through it just fine, but it does consume a lot of time and energy right now. BTW, I'm seeing a lot of those Can AM's lately. When I was in Florida, I must have seen 6 or so in the Daytona Area. They are getting to be popular. I need to bum a ride on one. They seem a bit like a snowmobile for the road!
