That does surprise me, considering the ineffectiveness of the 5.56 out of a short barrel. Thanks for sharing that information.

How did they manage with that short "buffer tube" on the end? All the other AR type pistols that I've seen have an extended tube for the buffer
and spring.

The spring to bring the bolt back into battery is not behind the carrier, it's attached to the op-rod above it, kind of like an AK-47. The carrier length
is reduced also, so that you don't need the buffer tube.
