Here's an ugly duckling compared to those gorgeous Mausers and Mannlichers. Best I can put together is that the rifle started life as a M38 or a modified M91 Mosin. The rifle was sporterized in Japan and likely engraved there as well; probably in the early 50's. The bottom pic is writing in the barrel channel. Haven't had it translated successfully. The stock is undergoing a restoration as it was cracked by the USPO when shipped to me. It needed a new recoil pad too. I'll post pics of the final redo.

There"s not a dam thing wrong with the way this rifle looks. It is not a ugly duckling,just different. The metal work is appealing, and well done. The wood is good,with function in mind. A good looking ,fast little rifle,packing a big punch. Would be interesting to know what the writing is. My guess would be that it was done for a high rank American officer. The more that I look at pics of sporters like this,in this forum, I would prefer to have one of these. Be proud of your weapon sir ,and thanks for sharing.

I was coincidentally looking at some old Winchester catalog pages that offered engraving styles and onlays and, Bingo. Sure enough there was the goofy deer. Near identical to this one. My bet is that someone supplied the engraver with an example and he/they used these patterns. Next time you go to a gun show that has some high grade Winchesters on display you can loudly exclaim: " Hey Look. There's one of those goofy deer Winchesters!" It's almost the same as this one without the deer. Same workmanship on the engraving, same stock, no deer! Receiver completely scrubbed. It also has what would appear to be scribbled Japanese? writing in the barell channel of the stock. I'll post pics tommorow.

But this is what it is. I am going to put this one on gunbroker in the next day or two if anybody is interested. I'm a Mauser fan myself but my boys like the nagant's cause it's cheaper and they can shoot more. I'm keeping the mil config ones I have. I really enjoy spending the time on old milsurp rifles trying to figure out every mark or stamp and document what it is and it's history. I knew it was something different or I wouldn't have bought it right now. I just can't spend the time with this one. I'll be interested to see what happens on GB with yours, because I likely will sell mine too. I finished messing with the stock repair and refinish so away it goes. Spinix, did you take a photo of the markings in the barrel channel? Maybe we can find someone to decipher them. Don

The dealer wanted $300.00 for it. Unfortunately the stock was rather ugly, having an oversize flaring grip and grip cap with white line spacers. I just couldn't find $300 to spend. If the stock had been more attractive I would have gone for it. Kind of interesting, it had the silver deer's head. It would really be interesting to find out where and by whom these were made up, not to mention how many. It would seem the deer's head would all come from the same source.
