Posts: 5184 (11/11/08 02:11 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Tags : None I have a Spanish Star Modelo Super in 9mm Largo, I know this has probably been asked before but just wanted to confirm, that only 9mm Largo/Bergmann-Bayard and possibly .38 ACP can be fired in this.....has anyone tried 9mm Steyr? ..I wouldn't do it, but I was just wondering the exact reason why 9x19 Para wasn't supposed to be fired in it, something about scorching the chamber wall of the barrel because the neck is 4mm shorter than the 9x21 ammo. I've been searching for a Star B barrel in 9x19 to "convert" the pistol to more easily found 9mm, with no luck.Spare barrels for a Star B full size are a tough pull....... The only Star pistols in 9x19 that I have found were the compact versions, I've been looking for a full-size B for a while but haven't found one.

Since the parabellum case is shorter, the case mouth doesn't reach the shoulder in the largo chamber. This leaves the cartridge held against the breach only by the extractor. Pretty soon the extractor will break.

Not enough to cause problems but enough to stress the brass and significantly shorten the life of it if you plan to reload those cases. As to the 38 ACP, best I recall, will also work fine with pressures in the proper range. However, do not attempt to use 38 Super! It is over pressure loaded for your Star Super. They have a semi-rim on which they headspace in the earlier pistols chambered in these cartridges . Modern 38 Super pistols usually headspace on the case mouth. Many Astra 400s were made with a recess in the chamber that fits the semi-rim of the 38 ACP, and when that cartridge is used in them it headspaces on the semi-rim. On other Astra 400s and most other 9mm Largo pistols the semi-rim prevents 38 ACP from chambering fully.

Anyway, I am in no hurry to fire the Star Model A Super, I have plenty of other 9mm's to play around with. It's just a really nice piece, very well made and in great shape, it's a shame that it's so hard to track down the right ammo for it. A lot of the fun of shooting military sidearms is to experience them in their original chambering, and the 9mm Largo is one that I haven't fired yet. People say it's kind of like a "9mm magnum" with more pop than the 9mm Parabellum. There has only been two sources I have found for 9mm Largo ammo, one is (was?) SARCO, the other a website that only allows phone orders and I'm not even sure is still in business, they sell original surplus Spanish 9mm Largo rounds from the 70's and 80's. With SARCO it's never clear what they still stock and how long it will take to get the order out, I have been to the store in NJ and it seems like they do mail order on "sum'mer time" hours......as in "sum' er time we send stuff out, sum'er time we don't"

I use Starline largo brass or 38 super brass. I load with normal 9mm dies and 9mm loading table. Works fine with both cast an jacket bullets.

I use Antaris' book on the Astras for that data.

Posts: 1700 (12/02/08 11:51 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Better yet is Antaris's book on Star Pistols - he has tables of serial numbers, dates of production, etc. The serial number will be on the butt of the gun under the word "SUPER" -- at least until the late 1950s or early 1960s when Star production numbers hit a million, then the serial number was moved to the frame because it was too long to continue stamping it on the butt. Colin pointed out the year proof code - that is the quickest and easiest way to date the piece. By the way, Antaris is nearing completion on rewriting the Astra book - it will be a compendium between 400 to 500 pages long.

I called their number a number of times to order some and was unable to connect with a talking human being. But once I was routed to someone dealing with ammo but was left waiting until I hung up. Maybe it was always siesta time at Sarco.

At least is says NO CORROSIVO on the box and my Destroyer has not grown any fur in it's bore. They are not showing any in stock currently but it has been there within the last month. I guess it's like that reassembled LC .30 carbine stuff they have on and off. You just about have to check every day.
