Iver Johnson M1 Carbine question |
Lead | |
|
A friend has just acquired an Iver Johnson M1 Carbine and I have scoured the internet to provide him information. Now tht I have joined this forum, I was
hoping to get your opinions on this topic. I am still waiting for him to provide me a serial number and picture, so until then, I just wanted to know if anyone
here owns one and your experiences. From what I have read so far, they seem to be inferior to all other makes, and no one has anything good to report. Are they
really that bad...!?
Thanks in advance...

GN13,
They're a commercial copy, not WWII GI. As long as he didn't think it was a WWII collectible and pay that kind of price, should be no harm. Some had issues, but if it shoots good, why worry? For that matter, you can get a WWII USGI that has been recently slapped together with worn-out parts, and it won't shoot well, either. What did he pay and what were his expectations? Crunch |

The later rifles were greatly altered from the original USGI design.
These later guns have a double recoil spring design and a stamped and welded op rod with an open cam area through which you can see the bolt locking lug. It's these later non-GI type rifles that had a bad reputation. However, not all of them were bad, and the only test is to actually shoot it. |

When IJ moved from MA to Plainfield, NJ, they bought out the Plainfield Co. Most of their carbines are made from US GI parts and Plainfield parts. I have one,
and although I've only shot it a little, I've had no problems with it.

" dfariswheel, I'm pretty sure that only applies to the late model Universal brand. I don't think Plainfields or Ivers ever took up that design. They did start manufacturing non GI parts but still of the same basic design.

Everything on the Iver Johnson interchanges with the government model- I've already swapped out the cheesy metal handguard and beech stock for a surplus
stock, new recoil springs, rear sight, etc. It's seen 2500 rounds or so, accurate and handy. Notably, it feeds some 100-130 grain bullet shapes that my
milsurps don't like. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one again. It may not be a real milsurp, but the other carbines have made it welcome in the safe
without too much jostling and complaining.
Bill, you're correct that the most widespread Universal design uses the two recoil springs. Some of these run like butter, some run like they are full of rocks, it's a crapshoot. |

Sorry, blew that one.
I READ Iver Johnson, but for some reason my brain SAW Universal. |

dfariswheel-
Considering how much knowledge you have shared with us here and and on other boards, we won't even THINK of discussing this very minor error. |

I think it's Halfheimer's.

I had one (first rifle I owned), and it was an unqualified piece of junk. Jammed about half the time. Shot far left - even with the sight drifted all the way
over you couldn't hit anything. It was a mess.

RANGE REPORT IJ M1 CARBINE | ||
|
Gentlemen...
Thanks to all of you that replied...and for the warm welcome! My friend Dave and I went to the range on Thursday morning (4/23/09) and I am happy to report that the IJ functioned flawlessly with Magtech 110 grain FMC. The gun was gifted to him by his new wife, whose first husband ( deceased ) had purchased it back in the 80's off the original owner, who happened to be in the same National Guard unit as the deceased. Condition: LNIB....(real good shape). He had two original 15 round mags and two after market ProMags along with two buttstock mag holders. The Promags looked to be the exact same configuration as the originals, but were hard to insert and remove. Having said that, they did work fine, without a FTF...and once we got it sighted in @ 50 yards with the iron sights...we just plinked away 200 rounds in no time. Cheap ammo, it seems, will be hard to find, as my friend was raped at $26.50 for a box of 50. I'm looking forward to the gun show coming up at King's Caterer's in Bristol, PA on May 9th and 10th to score more ammo at a better price. All in all...that little carbine actually impressed me...to the point where I told my buddy I got first dibs if he wants to sell it. Well...I guess I'll see you all later...Thanks again !!
