MN Chinese 53 front site and bayo lug is one piece |
Lead | |
|
Do not know where to put this but since it is a MN clone I figured here. Picked it up at a local pawn shop. Looked rugged and had a black painted stock. No
bayonet. Was told it was Hungarian. Gave $75.00 otd. Got is home and cleaned up the metal. Did not find the Hungarian 02. Instead it had three Chinese
characters and 26 in a triangle. All seriel numbers match and the bore is great. Was able to get the old paint off the stock. Cleaned up pretty well. Did
some research and found this model saw a lot of use in Viet Nam. Needless to say, I find this rifle interesting. Will get some pics up later. Welcome any
comments or insight. David

padavid12, Isn't this odd as I also picked up one that a guy had brought into my friends gunshop.I gave $90 for it and he gave me 80 rounds of loose
ammo.My only problem is that bubba took off the top hand guard and cut off and rounded the stock on the bottom.Guess finding a decent stock will be a challenge
as all the ones I have ever seen look like they had been drug down 10 miles of bad road. The kicker is the stock thats on it is beautiful. It only makes me wish
to have seen it before he ruined it.Mine also does not have a bayo and I don't know if he did it or the chinese did it as one web site says that they
sometimes did this for unknown reasons.Mine has 4 characters and was made in january of 1955.Was imported by N.A. Co.I also need a cleaning rod.It shoots
really well and is a good little carbine.I really like it as it filled a hole in my collection even if it is not the way I would like it. ERIC

Thanks for the come back. I am going to have to get some ammo. Mine is also missing the cleaning rod. Also, I rechecked and the 26 in not in a triangle and
is dated 1955.

Fun to find | ||

Chinese Type 53 rifle. Most that I have seen are in rough shape. Mine looks like every member of the Chinese army took turns carrying it.
I have the correct sling and some mn type ammo pouches. I also have the chest rig made for carrying the ammo in stripper clips. Bamasurp

Good price. I just paid $150 for a mismtach with import marks at a gunshop. High, I realize, but you just don't see them that often, and I needed one to
fill a slot in the collection. Overall condition is VG - bore is excellent. Stock is fine. Chinese bolt, even though the numbers don't match. I'm
happy with it.

Shot a couple of test fire rounds down at the river. Was not attempting to sight. In the future I will wear a shoulder pad. Kicked the tar out of me. Also,
when I said there was not bayonet, the bayonet lug has been ground off. Do not know if the Chinese did this or the previous owner. It does look like a decent
removal job.

I have a bayonet on mine so maybe yours just got damaged and that's what they did to it
Mine looked really rough when I got it. I looks like it was used to beat a few hundred Chinese people. I took it fully apart and cleaned it and I have to say it's actually a really great rifle. Has a lot of rifling and good blueing under the wood (not really any on the visible metal). The trigger is also really nice. My only real complaint in that the bayonet wobbles a lot when in the closed position |

The bayonet on mine wobbles as well. A very worn bayonet lug. I saw a nice one a few years ago and passed on it because they wanted $150.00 for it and that was
"Too Much" for an MN in my book at that time. Now on my list of missed rifles due to my stupidity. M28's, Chech VZ 52/57, Cheap 1903's, and
many more

My Type-53 came looking like it too was used for a hammer, complete with a few deep gouges. It has the bayo and parts from a number of different makers but the
barrel and receiver appear. original, however it was missing the front barrel band and the one I put on it will not snug up as tight as I like. That said, I
think the trigger is one of the best of the several M/Ns I own.
About bayos, go here to read more. It seems that some T-53 rifles were issued without bayonets.

Can anyone tell me if the bayo lug and front site are one unit? Thanks

Nope. The bayo lug is pinned on behind the front site. I'll see if I can find an M44 picture that shows it
Changed my mind. You can see http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinFeatures07.htm the bayonet lugs on the common models and the T53 is similar to the M44. It looks like the front light and bayonet lug are one unit on mine and the M44s there. At least I don't see a joint between the lug and the barrel

lug and front site is one piece | ||
|
I found out they are one unit. My bayo lug had been ground down. Looked fair but not that good. The pin from the bayo lug had already been removed. I
removed the pin from the front site and tapped it with a hamer and driver. The whole piece came off. I was able to cut off the remaining metal from the front
site. After filing smooth and cold bluing, I replaced the front site and put the pin back in. Now all I see is a small step down on the barrel and tiny
groove for the lug pin. I would have prefered to have the bayo lug and bayonet on my 53 as original but that was not to be. It does look much cleaner with
the ground down lug removed.

Just make sure you re-sight the rifle in without the bayonet. On the M44 Carbines, it can make up to six inches of difference in the POI of bullets at 100
yards with and without the bayonet extended, so removing it will surely make a difference, probably more.
