I'm helping a friend get into handloading when I haven't done in 20 years. (20!? where did they go???) Anyway, he wants to reload for 9mm para, 45acp, 7.62x39, 30/30, 7mm mauser, and 30-06. He just wants basic, no frills, brush country hunting loads. How few different powders can we get by with. Recommended favorite loads would be most welcome too along with any other advice offered. As part of the deal for setting him up, I get to share in the use of the equipment. Hey! Is there any easy way to convert... what is it with the 2 holes?... Berdan primed?... for reloading? IMR 3031 and or 4064 for your rifle needs. Depends on the bullet weight for each caliber listed as to what the powder weights will be. Now that I've listed my most used powders, I'm sure others will chime in with theirs.

It is versatile enough that it will handle any centerfire rifle cartridge from .223 to 8mm-Mauser, and it has a fast enough burn rate that it is OK for the M1-Garand in .30-06. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- What part of "shall not be infringed" don't you understand? You pays your money and you takes your choice. Don't know about 7.62X39, however, with any of the powders listed in this string.

I included 3031 for that reason, plus, it's the #1 for 30-30 too.

I always keep those two powders on hand and, if I had to restrict myself to two powders, those would be the two. I have not used H4895 in the 7.62x39, because I am very satisfied with the results I get with H4198, but I wouldn't hesitate to give it a try. I also like H4895 since I can comfortably use it in reduced recoil loads. I think you may have to go with more than one powder. For 9mm P and 45 ACP, you can use Bullseye, Unique, Win 231, Accurate Arms 2 and 5. Take your choice. For the 7mm and 30-06 you can use 4895, 4320, 4064, Win 748 and probably lots of others, no problem. The problem comes with the 30-30 and 7.62X39; both have smaller case capacities than the two other rifles, and the 30-30 is relatively low pressure, while the X39 is hotter. Probably can't find a powder that will do for them and for the 30-06 and 7mm as well. And possibly you'll have to have different powders for the 30-30 and 7.62X39. I don't know, having only reloaded very little for these two.

I would think it would work well for 30/30 also. It is a very versatile powder. W231 is a good choice for 9mm and 45 ACP. It is all I use for all pistol calibers I load. 4895 is all I use for rifle loads. I think these two powders would meet all his reloading needs.

If he wants the performance he shouldn't worry about that. I would recommend Unique, IMR3031, IMR4350 and maybe another powder for the 762x39

I use it for some of the old cartridges (8x50R, 8x56R) but nowhere else. Am I missing something? Dan

The 3031 can be used in the 30:30 and for light-medium bullets in the 30:06 in the event he wanted to use 110g or 125 grain bullets for varmints.

Failure! I cant do it! I allways find some powder or the other on sale and have to have it. I'll bet i have a dozen different powders on the shelf right now. I give up, I just love'em all. DM
