A2 stock recoil pad suggestions?

Hi, folks.

I'm in the process of putting together an AR-15 style .50 BMG rifle using a 29" Ferret50 upper and a Rock River Arms lower with an A2 stock. I picked up the 3lbs stock weight (the one that fits inside the stock) from Brownells and I also picked up a 3/4" recoil pad (similar to a Mason job) that replaces the standard recoil plate, but the buttstock screws simply pulled through the recoil pad when I tightened everything up. There were a couple of washers imbedded in the recoil pad, but they didn't help at all.

So, unless there's a dedicated buttplate with an integral recoil pad on it, I think I may need to go with some sort of slip-on recoil pad. I think those look a little cheesier than I'd prefer, but at this point I'm more inclined to be concerned with functionality over anything else.

Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Personally I would ditch the screws, and break out the ACRAGLAS GEL. With some of the black dye added of course....

You might want to check out Bell and Carlson . They make an adjustable cheek pad that replaces the but pad on the A2 stock. It has standard holes for putting regular recoil pads

The Kydex Cheekpiece features a CNC machined a base plate made from aircraft aluminum for strength and reduced weight. Replaces AR-15 A2 buttplate without modification and is fully adjustable for height. Back plate is pre-drilled to accept a recoil pad or to increase length of pull.

I actually ended up going with one of the large slip-on recoil pads from E&L:

It arrived yesterday. The pad comes with one 1/4" foam insert and I ordered an extra one so I'd have 1/2" of added foam padding inside the recoil pad. It fits pretty well, too - not exactly "like a glove" as advertised since the bottom edge of the pad needs to slide over the rear sling swivel, but it should be easy enough to modify the swivel with a Dremel tool (it's not like I'm actually going to be using a sling with this big 50). It was $14.95 for the recoil pad, $3.00 for the extra insert, and $8.00 for S/H - $25.95 total. Not too bad.

It feels pretty good, too. I like the curved shape of the recoil pad and the padding seems like it ought to be sufficient for this use. Of course, the true test awaits - I'm still eagerly anticipating the arrival of my Ferret50 upper. This recoil pad may not be as solid as something else, but for the price and the ease of use I'm pretty sure it will work nicely.

I may still need to get some sort of cheekrest, but I do have a Delta-style piece laying around somewhere in the gunroom if it's needed. I'll probably also pick up a Magpul PRS stock once they're available again so I can get come better adjustment points. From looking at the earlier photos of the Bushmaster BA50, I'm pretty sure they used one of E&L's large slip-on recoil pads over the adjustable buttplate of the PRS stock. They've since gone to a more dedicated Limbsaver piece, but at least it shows that I'll have a means for helping tame the recoil even with the PRS.

Well, sorry I didn't help. I have a bran shinny 30" BOHICA upper. I actually ground down a large Limb saver to fit the A-2 stock. The holes of course didn't line up. What is the wait time on the Ferret 50?

Oh, you did help - you gave me another option to look at. Not helping at all would have been you not responding at all to my question. The more info and options the better!

The wait time for the Ferret50 was originally at two months, then three months, and now four months.

I originally ordered it in January of this year was told is would be ready for shipping in March. It wasn't. I spoke with Dave (the owner/designer) in early April and he said the barrels we being heat treated and he was hoping to have everything ready by the end of April. It's now May. I'm planning to give him a jingle in another week or so to get a new status update. I'm not terribly irked, though - a lot of other places are take a lot longer to build things (I ordered an STG-58 carbine from DSA back in December and the last I heard from them - sometime in April - it's not even been started yet) and it did take me a little bit 'o time to get the ammo, lower, scope, rings, etc. Besides, here in North Dakota winter just got over not too long ago and everything is still pretty mucky in our normal shooting areas... I probably wouldn't be ready for shooting until the middle of May anyhow.
