Identifying Scrubbed Numbers |

I'm looking at a '43 Tula 91/30 laminent. I really like the way the 91/30s shoot and would like to get a collectible one. I've been looking this
one over and it has all the right features, including matching numbers. But one thing bugs me about the numbers- they look too good. Every other stamp looks
like it was worn flat while the serial numbers are all crisp and deep. For example the Tula star is visible, but the arrow is nearly invisible. Am I paranoid
or is restamping something to watch out for?

If it's a refurb...........it's probably been "stamped-matched" and that's how you got it. Just enjoy it...........you'll love it!!

A lot of Mosins had parts renumbered to match when they were repaired or refurbished post-war. It's not a problem - as long as everything matches
(especially if all the serial numbered parts have the Cyrillic letter prefix and not just the numbers), you are lucky and should be happy.
Also, on many wartime Tula rifles, the Tula star is often very lightly stamped and the arrow in it is barely visible or only partially stamped. So even on an all original and matching number, a light star and even lighter arrow are proper and correct, and nothing to worry about. If the bore is clean with good rifling, and the price is right, an all matching '43 Tula in a laminate stock is quite a desirable rifle. Have you checked the inside of the left receiver rail to see if by any chance this rifle is an "ex"-sniper? That would really be an extra bonus and would greatly increase the value of the rifle. |

Too late. I went in on my birthday to buy it and it had just been sold the day before after sitting there 4 months. Wasn't even on sale. Oh well, I
bought a Marlin 336 lever instead (after forking out a couple hundred more). I still have my '43 regular stock 91/30 that shoots great so I'm happy
there too.
