I know the Sovs played mix & don't match on these rifles. Beyond that, I know nothing of 'German' mauser markings. First, the 'dirty birds' and serial numbers. This number has be applied on the gouged out part of the left side butt stock too. It doesn't seem likely the reds would scrub the old serials and leave the eagles, neither does it look like it. Are those this weapon's original numbers? Hardly seems likely but I don't know. The "X" is the Sov 'crossed rifles'. Right? What are the other marks? Waffenamt I suppose? But the asterisk? This is under the bbl following 'round the diameter. Below you can see the start of it in the 38 above the woodline ahead of the receiver. Any enlightenment would be... well... enlightening. Thanks! RU is anunidentifed steel makers logo.40 was the year it was made.last picture is of the waffenamts or inspection proofs to show that the parts passed inspection. my ax41 is in the 3800 sn range so yours was made when they started the sn a block.germans went from 1-10,000 than started sn over again with a letter block
