Quick 8x56R reloading question |
Lead | |
|
I talked to a guy yesterday that says you can reload 8x56R using .323 8mm Mauser bullets rather than the more scarce .330 bullets. Is this true or is it
baloney?? If it is feasible, can you use standard 8x56R dies (Lee brand in my case), and are there any caveats in respect to powders you can use?

Reloading 8x56R on the cheap

Yes, one can reload 8x56R using .323 diameter Bullets, but only if they are FLAT Based for "Base Upswage Obturation" in the .330 deep groves. Boat
tailed Bullets will not "base Upswage" from .323 to .330 (That's why the original Military 8x56R uses .329-.330 diameter FMJBTs.).
I use ex-mil 154grain FBs ( from Chinese and very old US Contract 7,9mm ammo) for such loads...they work reasonably well with a stiff load of modern Powder. Reloading: Several Manuals ( Lee in particular) are grossly UNDERLOADED leading to case seal problems and primer setback and piercing. Original Military 8x56R ( 207 FMJBT) used between 52 and 58 grains for German-style Flat flake Powder...the lowest Tubular (IMR) type powder load would be 45 grains for a 207 grain for starters, and say 48 grains for an undersized 154 grain (.323) for starters.... The case capacity of the large diameter 8x56R case is similar to a .30/06, so case load densities would approximate those of a .30/06, minimum at least a 7,9 Mauser or 7,7 Japanese. One must remember that the 8x56R case was designed to use the common Powders of the Era, which in Europe was by and large,(German) "Gewehr Blattchen Pulver, 2.0x2,0x 0,4 "( metric flake dimensions...the actual chemical nature of the Nitration Level gave the individual Lot burning Velocity, which, uniquely, was very stable from the 1890s right through to the end of WW II. Translating a Flake Powder Load to a Tubular Powder Load ( different progressive Flame velocities) is an excercise fraught with difficulties. It is always an exercise in "Test and try", starting low ( similar Volumetric density to known Volume other (Tubular) Loads), and going from there. Since I mostly recycle original 8x56R Flake Powder, anyway, from Primer-dead cases, and Pulldowns ( for making 8x50R cases) in Lot sized volumes (several Kilos at a time), I have not really developed a "Tubular" loading for 8x56R, except in an experimental manner. Lee 8x56R Dies are for 0.329" bullets

Eagle7,
The Lee two die set I have for 8x56R is setup to open the case mouth for the correct 0.329" bullets. The "normal" 0.323" Mauser 8mm bullets will fall right through the case mouth after resizing. I have to use another 0.323" necked sizing die not to open up the mouth too much. |

Graf and Sons sells the correct .330" sized bullets. They have 205 grain Hornady spire points, and 208 grain Prvi Partizan FMJBT's.
Go ahead, make my day. |

www.buffaloarms.com makes a few bullet weights specifically for the 8x56r. I'd take a look there also.

This was the caliber that got me into casting my own bullets. Loads of fun to do and the recoil is SO much more enjoyable. I can shoot my M95 all day.

I've had good luck swaging .338 jacketed soft points down to .329 using a Lee push up sizer.
The Speer 200gr. bullets pt. # 2405 squirt thru with little effort and shoot fine. John "Put your faith in the Lord,a British man-o-war and ram them, damn your eyes Man!" |
