I am trying to duplicate the overall cartridge length of a factory 174 grain FMJ cartridge.But I am using a Sierra 150 SP spitzer bullet.The original factory length fits the magazine, and feeds perfect in my Bren semi-auto.Do I need to seat the 150 grain bullet deeper in the case for safe functioning? Now the depth that it's seated at leaves an air space between the neck and the height of the powder.I used 40 grains of IMR 4895 with full length sized RP unfired cases trimmed to the recommended length.The over all length now is 3.038.Many thanks in advance.

A 150gr bullet will be shorter than a heavier bullet of the same design but depending on the neck length it may be possible to seat it at the same cartridge length. IMR4895 powder is tolerant of air space between the powder and bullet base so no problem there. The minimum bullet seating depth rule I follow is to seat the bullet bearing surface into the case neck an amount equal to the diameter of the bullet. Of course other factors apply such as fitting the magazine, feeding and free bore (distance between bullet and rifling). Bullet shape affects COL such as a rounded nose heavy bullet will require a shorter COL where a spitzer bullet will be longer. C&R rifles typically have long free bore so the COL is determined by bullet grip, magazine and feeding however free bore must be verified.

Probably especially true for a semi-auto. Re: airspace. Shake a factory round (not Cordite loaded). You can hear and feel the powder bouncing around. Extruded powders are tolerant of airspace. IMR 4895 is very good in this respect. 'holic
